2013 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. With more refinements for 2013, it keeps getting better. introductionthe 2013 ford mustang features a facelift and comes out bigger, bolder, cleaner. It's a change, not just a tweak. The 2013 mustang resembles a steve mcqueen bullitt mustang, its mouth shaped more like '70 mustang than a '65.  the mustang was redesigned for 2005 and got rave reviews for its looks, totally capturing the old mustang but still looking contemporary. The styling tweaks since then have made it even better, and that holds true for the 2013 mustang.  a black eggcrate grille opens wide over the bumper, with a clean and full chin, fascia, and air intakes, and just a tidy flat-black horizontal spoiler at the lip. The triangular rear window masterfully evokes the roofline of original '65 mustang, replacing its fake louvers with glass.  we're less enthusiastic about the interior of the 2013 mustang. Reviews all end up saying that the materials are okay considering the price of the car, remember it's only a mustang, and we can't argue. The steering wheel lacks imagination, and that's disappointing.  however the cloth seats are great; cloth can easily be a deal-breaker, and in the mustang it's not. In fact, the cloth seats fit better than the leather, maybe because they grip better. The optional recaro seats in either cloth or leather are excellent. There's good head and leg room up front, and visibility through the windshield is good, especially for a low-slung coupe. There's considerably more room and better visibility in the mustang than in the chevrolet camaro.  naturally, the two-passenger rear seat is no place for adults. Rear-seat headroom is limited by the rake of the coupe roof, and leg room is minimal, even with the front seats moved forward. That comes with the territory of such a car and its shape and is a small price to be paid for such proportions.  the retro instrument panel in the v6 and gt models clings too hard to the theme, we think. Having retro instrumentation on a car with modern performance like the mustang is like having a telephone with a cord. The optional shaker audio system is acoustically superb. Ford's sync system works well to choose music, but we had trouble operating it with voice commands.  the mustang convertible has a power fabric top and glass rear window. Trunk space in the convertible is reduced to 9. 6 cubic feet, from 13. 4 cubic feet in the coupe. It's a fairly high-revving engine, reaching its horsepower peak at 6500 rpm and its torque peak at 4250 rpm, so it's good to play with. And the manual comes with hill start assist, so no worries about coasting backward when starting off on a steep hill. The automatic, meanwhile, does have a manual-shift feature it's awkward to use.  the mustang v6 is epa-rated at 19/31 miles per gallon city/highway. However, we didn't get anywhere near that, running it hard on twisty two-lanes.  mustang gt has a smooth, rumbling and growling 5. 0-liter v8 engine. That's quicker than the chevrolet camaro ss, even with its huge 6. 2-liter engine and 426 horsepower. But the mustang is 230 pounds lighter, and that makes a big difference in acceleration, also handling.  the boss 302 makes 444 horsepower with the same engine. However the boss has non-retro instrumentation, that's way cleaner. And it's a boss 302.  brakes are good. Ford engineers have revised the braking system of the flex, taurus, and mustang, and the feel is powerful without being overly sensitive. The names of the modes are apt. Comfort mode kept the ride comfortable when driving over rough pavement, sport mode improved responsiveness on winding roads. We found the electronic stability control effective without being intrusive.  the 650-horsepower shelby gt 500 joins the 2013 mustang lineup. Also standard are a 2. 73 rear axle ratio, 17-inch aluminum wheels, electronic power steering, stainless steel dual exhaust, hid headlamps, led taillamps, capless fuel filler, manual air conditioning, tilt steering wheel with controls, cloth seats, and 50/50 rear folding seats (not convertible).  the v6 performance package includes a strut-tower brace, larger front sway bar and svt rear sway bar, stiffer front springs, upgraded brake calipers with performance pad, 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, 255/40r19 summer-only tires, higher stability control calibration, black side mirrors, 3. 31 rear axle, and unique engine cover (manual transmission only). There's also an equipment package 295) and tech package 1295). For the premium models, there's a comfort package and electronics package.  mustang gt models use a 5. 0-liter v8 making 420 horsepower and 390 foot-pounds of torque, with the same transmission selection, 3. 73 rear axle, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. Equipment and options closely match the v6 packages. The premiums have reclining front bucket seats, a shaker audio system, and ambient lighting.  boss 302 uses a pumped-up version of that v8, with 444 hp and 380 foot-pounds, and 19-inch aluminum wheels. Recaro cloth is optional, as is a laguna seca track package 6995).  shelby gt 500 coupe and convertible mean business with a 650-horsepower and 600-foot-pounds 5. 8-liter supercharged intercooled v8, mated to a tremec 6-speed manual transmission, with 6-piston brembo calipers on 14-inch front rotors. Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, 3. 31 rear axle ratio, torsen differential, black-vented aluminum hood, gt 500 striping, and shelby cobra front fascia, splitter, and spoiler. Also creature comforts such as leather seats, ambient lighting, lcd message center, suede steering wheel, satellite radio. Extra oil coolers, aerodynamics, and 20-inch wheels.  safety equipment on all mustangs includes front and front side airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitor, and ford's mykey system, which allows car owners (parents) to limit the speed and sound system volume, when they hand the keys over to others (teenagers). walkaroundthe looks of the mustang keep evolving nicely. It was the best looking of the reborn retro machines when it was redesigned in 2005, and it's only gotten better looking since then.  for 2013, mustang gets another facelift, with a stronger and cleaner grille and front fascia, incorporating the air intakes and doing away with all the flat-black plastic from before. New hid projector-beam headlamps have two led streaks at their sides, a look that will take getting used to.  the sequential led taillamps are another matter, instantly pretty on the nice rear end that's true to '65 mustang. At the rear, there's new body-colored fascia on the 2013 mustang, again replacing flat black pieces (good riddance). Another improvement for 2013 is the loss of the flat-black rockers; they're now body-colored and grownup. And there are many new wheel designs for 2013.  overall, the 2013 mustang looks tougher and more mustangy than ever. The combination of open-mouthed grille and bulging hood gives the 2013 mustang muscular distinction. The gt boasts real black vents, in the bulging hood over its beefy 5. 0-liter v8. The chrome mustang galloping horse logo against the black eggcrate grille, on the base v6 model, also looks hot, and traditional. The foglamps go inside the grille like bookends on the silver horse, also just like 1965.  the sideview mirrors do something cool: when the unlock button on the remote is pressed, an image of a galloping horse in white led light appears on the ground like a spotlight on a stage.  the small triangular rear window is a stroke of design brilliance, and makes the roofline sleek. It's wonderfully and totally true to the 1965 mustang fastback, which used vertical fake louvers in that triangular roofline sweep.  the twin wide stripes on the 2013 shelby gt that's coming in summer of 2012 are classic. Some of the other graphics packages are dubious. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Bucket Seats✔ Air Conditioning✔ Leather Seats✔ Aluminum Wheels

2013 ford fusion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new family sedan with uncanny good looks. introductionford fusion is all-new for 2013. Like the love child of an aston martin and a bmw, the all-new fusion sports a wide grille with strong horizontal lines, sleek wraparound headlamps and sharp, assertive creases.  the 2013 ford fusion is a five-passenger, midsize sedan. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional.  the 2013 fusion is available with a wide range of powertrains, including gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. The 2. 0-liter turbo delivers the best acceleration performance. Fuel economy is aided by sticking with smaller engines, as well as by incorporating systems such as electric-assist power steering, and an optional automatic start/stop feature on models equipped with the 1. 6-liter ecoboost engine. We found the start/stop feature irritatingly rough but it can be turned off.  the standard 2. 5-liter engine is epa-rated at 22/34 mpg city/highway. Models with the new 1. 6-liter engine achieve 25/37 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 24/37 mpg with the automatic. Fusion energi is designed to run on pure electric power for short commutes and can be charged using a 120-volt or 240-volt outlet.  the 2013 fusion is built on an all-new platform, which ford says is more rigid and safer than before. Although classified as midsize, the 2013 fusion feels large and cavernous. This second-generation fusion rides on a wheelbase that's about five inches longer than the first-generation version (2006-12), but overall body length is only an inch longer thanks to shorter overhangs. Fusion feels big while driving, and a u-turn requires of plenty of space, although the turning circle was cut down a bit from the previous generation and beats that of the honda accord. We found the fusion hybrid operates smoothly but didn't love the low, grumbly sound it makes.  technology abounds in the 2013 ford fusion. Optional advanced safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection and lane-keeping assist, which helps wandering drivers stay in their lanes. But other automakers have launched all-new flagships this year, including the 2013 honda accord and 2013 nissan altima. The toyota camry was refreshed for 2012 and remains a perennial favorite. The hyundai sonata is also an excellent alternative, although even its alluring styling can't top the fusion's. lineupthe 2013 ford fusion comes in s, se, and titanium trims. Fusion hybrid comes in se trim only. Standard equipment is upgraded with an eight-way power driver seat with power lumbar, rear air vents, a rear fold-down armrest, an enhanced audio display, satellite radio capability, heated mirrors, a keyless entry keypad and17-inch alloy wheels.  options on fusion se include an appearance package 1,250) with seating surfaces made from recycled materials, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, foglights, a rear spoiler and 18-inch painted alloy wheels. The luxury package 2,300) includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver memory settings, a power-reclining passenger seat and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The technology package 1,000) includes dual-zone automatic climate control, the myford touch touchscreen interface with an upgraded version of sync, two usb ports and a rearview camera. Standalone options include a sunroof 895), reverse sensing system 295), and 18-inch wheels 495). Fusion se models with the 1. 6-liter engine may be equipped with an automatic start/stop system 295) that turns the engine off at idle to save fuel.  fusion titanium is available with front-wheel drive 30,300) or all-wheel drive 32,200) and is powered by the turbocharged 2. 0 liter engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters. Fusion titanium comes with leather upholstery, heated front sport seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition/entry, remote ignition, auto-dimming side mirrors, rear parking sensors, a 12-speaker sony audio system with hd radio, a sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch wheels. Standalone options include a sunroof 895) and 19-inch wheels 695).  fusion hybrid 27,200) is powered by a 2. 0-liter inline-4 paired with an electric motor and an electric continuously variable transmission (ecvt) and comes with all features found on the fusion se plus cloth seats made from 100 percent recyclable materials, dual-zone automatic climate control and unique 17-inch wheels.  safety features on all models include front seat side airbags, front knee airbags and side curtain airbags, antilock disc brakes, traction control, electronic stability control. Emergency crash notification comes standard. Optional blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and a lane-keeping function can reduce the chance of an accident. An optional rearview camera can help the driver spot a small child behind the car when backing up. Available all-wheel drive enhances stability in slippery conditions. Its wide-mouth horizontal grille evokes the design language of aston martin (which, for a time, was owned by ford), and its wraparound headlamps and sharp body creases could have been penned by designers from a luxury german brand. Ford succeeded in making the car look high-end and modern, with styling cues that are aggressive but still approachable. It rides on a wheelbase that's about five inches longer than the old model, although overall body length is only an inch longer, thanks to shorter overhangs. The 2013 fusion is about an inch wider and taller than the last generation. There's plenty of space up front for legs, shoulders and heads, and roominess is accentuated by concave door trim, which looks as if it were pared away by a giant potato peeler. Strangely, the narrow, body-hugging sport seats don't match their cavernous surroundings. Front seats sit low in the cockpit, and combined with the relatively high hood line, we had a hard time finding a comfortable seat height. On the plus side, the headrests sit at a surprisingl. 2013 ford focus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty st and electric join newly redesigned lineup. introductionone of the most popular compacts on the market, the ford focus has a sharp, futuristic look that leaves behind old stereotypes of small, affordable american cars. Completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, the focus makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in its class. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and a 6-speed automatic is optional, with selectshift manual mode an option for the automatic. The standard 2. 0-liter engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.  epa fuel economy estimates for the 2013 ford focus are 26/36 mpg city/highway with 5-speed manual, 28/38 mpg with 6-speed automatic.  the new 2013 focus st features a more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine that cranks out an impressive 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Focus st comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and sport-tuned suspension. Focus st comes as a hatchback only with a special body kit. The sporty focus st is rated 23/32 mpg city/highway.  the focus electric is powered by a 107-kilowatt electric motor that has an estimated range of 76 miles per full charge and an epa energy efficiency equivalent rating of 110 mpge city and 99 mpge highway or 105 mpge combined. It's an electric car, so gas stations are a thing of the past. The focus electric competes most closely with the leaf, although the mitsubishi i-miev is a smaller, less expensive all-electric alternative. The soft materials are clearly high quality, while the hard trim looks slathered on. There's excellent legroom in front, but rear legroom is only moderate. The gauges are easy to read and include a big tachometer and speedometer with cool blue needles.  the 2013 focus uses the myford touch connectivity interface powered by microsoft's sync. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it was designed that way, but it doesn't always work that way. We found this latest version of myford touch difficult to use.  on the road, the focus is exceptionally quiet. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with luxury-levels of sound insulation practically everywhere, including the doors, windshield, carpet and headliner. Ride quality was smooth and soft. We found the standard engine extremely smooth with plenty of power. However, we thought the 6-speed automatic was imprecise in its shifting, while the 5-speed manual felt ropey.  the 2013 ford focus competes with the toyota corolla, honda civic, chevrolet cruze, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte and volkswagen jetta. lineupthe 2013 ford focus comes in sedan and hatchback versions. Focus comes standard with a 2. 0-liter engine. Still no usb port or bluetooth, and rear drums. Navigation with siriusxm traffic and travel link is optional. Other options include heated front seats, remote start system, cargo area protector.  focus st hatchback 23,700) features the more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine, 6-speed manual transmission, and sports suspension. Focus st comes with cloth seats.  focus electric 39,200) features an electric motor and a single-speed direct-drive transmission. The focus electric comes with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 60/40 folding rear seats, myford touch and myford mobile interfaces, with two unique driving screens, rearview camera, reverse sensing system, mykey, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, rearview camera, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe ford focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The hatchback looks especially aerodynamic. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous (pre-2012) focus.  active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the chevrolet cruze are doing this, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split-trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps make the focus look being safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the focus chassis uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorthe first thing we notice about the focus is its seats. Focus models have had comfortable seats for years tne the current models come standard in sturdy fabric, with leather optional. The seats in the focus are much better than those in the chevrolet cruze.  the interior of the focus feels like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, we could easily imagine being a pilot with all those dials, switches, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the center stack, and led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors. The focus electric feels even more futuristic, with two screens that show information about driving efficiency, charge capacity and other do-dads related to the electric powertrain.  the gauges on the dashboard and instrument panel are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. However, we haven't been in a base s model, maybe it's got a more spartan interior missing the overkill trim. Ford says it's designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver. We're not sure they've succeeded in achievi. Bucket Seats✔ Power Locks✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Tachometer✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ Bluetooth✔ Remote Start✔ Cruise Control✔ Aluminum Wheels

2013 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Significant revisions make for a satisfying large sedan. introductionthe 2013 ford taurus is new, though it isn't all-new. It's not a new generation, just the current generation at its peak. This latest taurus has many significant changes for the 2013 model year, all good so far as we can see, from powertrain to interior to exterior, in that order. Three engines are available for the 2013 taurus.  the standard 3. 5-liter v6 engine has been updated for 2013 for improved fuel economy, increased power and lower emissions. It's called ti-vct, for twin independent variable camshaft timing, a system that precisely times the valve openings to increase power, throttle response and fuel mileage, while reducing emissions. As a result, the 2013 taurus gets an epa-estimated 19/29 miles per gallon city/highway with front-wheel drive, 18/26 mpg with all-wheel drive. The 3. 5-liter v6 with ti-vct now makes 288 horsepower, a boost of 25 horsepower over the previous model.  a new ecoboost 2. 0-liter engine expected to get 31 miles per gallon on the highway is an option, though not initially. Keeping in mind that the taurus is a full-sized car, these numbers make a statement about ford's commitment to improved fuel mileage with increased power.  the twin-turbo ecoboost 3. 5-liter v6 that comes in the 2013 taurus sho has been pumped up to 365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque beginning at a super-low 1500 rpm. Sho stands for super high output and this engine lives up to the moniker. The 2013 taurus sho engine delivers 17/25 mpg, according to the epa. Premium fuel is recommended. We got 19. 4 mpg running it fairly casually in the city, on a freeway, and on two-lanes; and 17. 6 mpg running it hard on a twisty two-lane.  the 2013 taurus also gets a styling makeover, with a new hood, wider grille, cleaner front bumper and fascia, new wheels, new halogen projector beam headlamps, new deck lid, and led taillamps. Unlike the new 2013 ford flex that wiped out the traditional ford blue oval with chrome, the grille remains ford's signature three-bar with a blue oval (cool black mesh on the sho). A new trick is active grille shutters, that reduce aerodynamic drag at highway speeds.  the 2013 taurus has presence: smooth, cool and muscular. Body-colored door handles and mirrors, with graceful headlamps; long horizontal slits for headlamps, that seem like they are as much on the corners and fenders of the car as on its face. Horizontal character lines travel under the door handles and streak rearward at the same level as the headlamps, as if they're an extension of speed. Taurus is a big car, larger than the midsize ford fusion and comparing with the chrysler 300, chevrolet impala, toyota avalon, and buick lacrosse.  the interior gets a makeover for 2013 as well, a clean and stylish instrument panel, center stack, and console. There are rich materials on the graceful dash, and padding on the sides of the center console, where the driver's leg rests and is sometimes braced during cornering.  the taurus is sweetly silent on the highway, thanks to work on sound insulation, namely behind the dash to keep engine noises at bay, in the wheelwells for road noise, and the a-pillars for wind noise. It's quiet also because the engine is so smooth, whether the ti-vct or ecoboost.  as with other 2013 fords, the myfordtouch system of electronic control gets revamped, after being introduced just two years ago. It's standard on 2013 taurus limited and 2013 taurus sho models, using a terrific 8-inch touch screen on the center stack. Ford owners liked the idea but hated the execution on the 2011 models, so myfordtouch has been redesigned for 2013 to be simpler. What's more, the new myfordtouch can be downloaded by dealers into any ford vehicle that has the prior program. For daily driving the taurus with the 3. 5-liter v6 more than holds its own, including out where the roads weave and wind, which it handles with alertness and stability. The taurus is not a sports sedan. The ride is comfortable, as the suspension skillfully soaks up bumps. Power from the 3. 5-liter v6 is smooth and progressive, with no awkward gas pedal tip-in that many cars with electronic throttles have nowadays. The ti-vct v6 is even exhaust-tuned to deliver a satisfying little growl under acceleration.  the 6-speed automatic selectshift transmission is seamless and well-programmed. Even in the se, there's a sport mode, with manual control using a thumb button on the side of the shift lever. lineup2013 ford taurus se, sel, and limited come standard with a 3. 5-liter v6 and 6-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available. Taurus sel awd 30,650) adds all-wheel drive.  taurus limited 33,000) upgrades with perforated leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rearview camera, heated memory mirrors, puddle lamps, 19-inch premium painted aluminum wheels, ambient lighting, cargo net, myfordtouch with 8-inch center stack screen, color 4. 2' lcd instrument cluster screen, and power passenger seat. Taurus limited awd 34,850) adds all-wheel drive.  taurus sho 39,200) comes standard with all-wheel drive and the twin-turbo 3. 5-liter v6 making 365 horsepower. Sho uses a beefier 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, a sport-tuned suspension, bigger brakes, and 19-inch wheels. The taurus sho comes with unique sho interior trim, pushbutton start, and top-grain leather-wrapped power tilt/telescope steering wheel, aluminum pedals, sync voice-activated communications and entertainment, hid headlamps, black mesh grille, black rear spoiler. Optional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alert, blind spot information system, and collision warning with brake support. Optional all-wheel drive can enhance handling stability in slippery conditions. walkaroundfor 2013, taurus gets a makeover with a new hood, wider grille, cleaner front bumper and fascia, new wheels, new halogen projector beam headlamps, new deck lid, and led taillamps. Thankfully the grille remains ford. S signature three-bar with a blue oval (cool black mesh on the sho), unlike the new flex that wiped out the oval with chrome.  taurus has a presence now: muscular, smooth and cool. Body-colored doorhandles and mirrors, with graceful headlamps; long horizontal slits that seem like they. Re as much on the corners and fenders of the car, as on its face. Horizontal character lines under the door handles streak rearward at the same level as the headlamps, as if they. Re an extension of speed.  from the side, following these lines, the rear deck looks like it was sliced off by a guillotine. With a chrome strip between the taillamps and across the vertical trunk lid, the tail does not look as good from the rear as it does from the side. It looks a bit like a chrysler. The sho carries a tidy black spoiler back there.  the roofline is distinguished; we'd probably like it more without the chrome trim around the side windows.  somehow, even with a 5-inch shorter wheelbase than the ford flex, the taurus body is as long as that seven-passenger people-hauler. The taurus isn't the midsize. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Cruise Control✔ Air Conditioning✔ Remote Start✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Aluminum Wheels

2013 ford c-max hybrid review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Five-door hatch in hybrid and energi plug-in hybrid models. introductionthe ford c-max is a five-door hatchback originally built for the european market and new to the u. For the 2013 model year. The 2013 ford c-max comes in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the latter dubbed energi. (no non-hybrid version are available in the u. Here's the difference: ford c-max hybrid uses a 1. 4-kwh lithium-ion battery, while ford c-max energi packs a hefty 7. 6-kwh lithium-ion pack. Gears are selected by an electronic continuously variable transmission (ecvt).  ford c-max hybrid is epa-rated at 45/40 mpg city/highway, those figures lower than the initial numbers. In general, hybrids are most efficient in the city, since stop-and-go driving uses the regenerative braking system more frequently to help charge the battery.  ford c-max energi plug-in hybrid is rated at 44/42 mpg. The energi plug-in hybrid is epa-rated at 100 mpge combined miles per gallon equivalent. According to ford, it has a top speed of 85 mph. It can drive up to 21 miles in electric-assisted mode, and can go up to 620 miles with a fully charged battery and a full tank of gas. This beats the toyota prius plug-in, which has a six-mile all-electric range and 540-mile total range.  like something out of a sci-fi movie, the c-max can learn frequently driven routes and will automatically adjust its settings to maximize efficiency. Ford engineers developed this feature, called ev+, which uses the car's built-in gps and proprietary software to adjust how battery power is used. There's a 60/40-split rear seat that folds completely flat, creating more room for cargo. However, because of its battery, the c-max lacks the trunk space of most gas-powered compact sedans. Optional is a handsfree liftgate, first found on the ford escape, that allows anyone with the key fob to open the hatch by simply waving a foot underneath the back of the vehicle.  versions of the c-max equipped with navigation use the latest version of myfordtouch, which has improved since the last generation but can still be irksome to use. Still, there are some handy features, like charging station location information on the c-max energi. But, unfortunately, it's not possible to tell in advance if those stations are already occupied. Once the c-max energi is plugged in, however, ford's software can alert drivers via text message if the charge is interrupted, foiling any potential plug stealers.  competitors to ford c-max are few and far between. Alternatives to the hybrid include honda insight, toyota prius and prius v wagon. Plug-ins that rival the c-max energi are currently limited to the chevrolet volt and the toyota prius plug-in. The hybrid is available in two trim levels, and the energi is offered in a single trim.  the c-max hybrid se 25,200) comes standard with cloth seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, manual adjustable driver and passenger seats, a leather-wrapped, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with menu and audio controls, leather shift knob, power windows, trip computer, cruise control, remote keyless entry, ford sync voice-activated system, 6-speaker audio system with cd player, auxiliary jack and usb port, a 60/40 split folding rear seat and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the c-max hybrid sel 28,200) adds leather-trimmed and heated seats, a power adjustable driver seat, pushbutton start, universal garage door opener, satellite radio capability with a 6-month included subscription, the myford touch interface with touchscreen, fog lamps, power heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, rain sensing wipers and a reverse sensing system. Most of these additional features can be added as options on the hybrid se. Options on the hybrid sel include a package that bundles an upgraded sony audio system, navigation, hd radio 1,195); another that adds a power liftgate, rearview camera and hands-free liftgate 1,695), and a third that combines both at a slight discount 2,495). Rearview camera is optional. walkaroundford is strictly limiting the c-max to hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants in the u. Maybe because research says early hybrids based on existing gasoline models didn't sell. Marketers soon figured out that people wanted a unique-looking car that people could recognize right away as being a hybrid. And although ford is now offering an electric version of the focus and a both hybrid and plug-in versions of the fusion sedan, the c-max will satisfy those who still insist that alternative fuel cars should look different.  despite its distinctive shape, the ford family resemblance is apparent. C-max has the same wheelbase and footprint as the ford focus, but, in addition to its wagon silhouette, it's also taller and has a more upright, utilitarian look. The front end features a thin, narrow upper grille with the oval ford logo, and a wide-mouthed, geometric lower grille with strong horizontal lines. Headlamps are long and angular, and blend up into the hood line.  from the side, the c-max has a high roofline and strong wheel arches. A high, straight character line runs across the door handles to the wraparound tail lamps. Standard 17-inch wheels make the car look substantial, in contrast with some of the dinkier wheels and tires found on early hybrid models from other brands.  in back, angular tail lamps and deep body creases keep it interesting without being obnoxious. A prominent rear bumper is both distinctive and useful for resting groceries or packages. Optional on the c-max is ford's handsfree liftgate technology, which allows anyone with the key fob to open the liftgate by simply waving a foot underneath the back of the vehicle. interiorthe similarities to the ford focus continue with the interior design of the c-max. The instrument panel, climate controls and center stack feature the same angles, vents and knobs. It looks busy compared to the prius's clean, almost too-austere controls.  the c-max instrument cluster uses a central speedometer with ford's pleasing soft blue lighting. On either side, 4. 2-inch lcd displays keep drivers informed about energy use, phone functions, audio settings and other vehicle details. Dubbed smartgauge, these dual screens include a brake coach feature that helps train drivers how to get the most out of the regenerative braking system.  the steering wheel on the c-max is covered with soft-touch material and is comfortable to hold and use. However, as with other ford steering wheels, the myriad controls look confusing and cluttered. The audio and handsfree phone controls, which are placed low on the wheel, are especially awkward to use.  overall, materials are attractive and appear durable. The gear shift seems unnecessarily large and bulky, and sticks out at an angle from the center console in sharp contrast to the prius's nubby little shifter. Door inserts have a softer plastic above the arm rest, and hard plastic below, with deep, wide pickets for cans, water bottles and various accessories.  models equipped with navigation and myford touch use an 8-inch touch screen that displays live traffic and weather in addition to audio and navigation controls. On the c-max energi, charging station locations are embedded into the navigation maps, although technology doesn't yet exist to know whether those stations are occupied. Drivers can pair their android or apple smartphones to use streaming audio via bluetooth and other features. While the myford touch system is good in theory, certain aspects are annoying, including not-so-accurate voice recognition and menu options that aren't immediately intuitive.  front seats sit very high and upright. Even shorter people feel tall in the car, especially in the passenger seat, which doesn't have a height adjustment feature. This is almost disconcerting for those used to driving or riding in a low, cockpit-style cabin. Front leg room is 40. 4 inches, a couple of inches less than the chevrolet volt, and about an inch less than the prius v.  however, the high roofline on the c-max makes for plenty of headroom, even in the back seat. Rear headroom is 39. 4 inches, almost an inch more than the prius v and nearly three-and-a-half inches more than the volt. The ford c-max bests the competitors when it comes to rear legroom, too with a spacious 36. 5 inches, a tad more than the prius v and a whop.
