2006 chevrolet corvette review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A supercar bargain for the ages. introductionthe chevrolet corvette is the best high-performance value in america. The corvette delivers supercar performance for the price of a midsize luxury sedan.  and for all its performance, the corvette does not exact a painful toll on its driver or passenger. Chevrolet has eliminated nearly all the cruder, less desirable traits that characterized corvettes of yore. It's much better than the c5 it replaced, which was a solid sports car in its own right. What makes the c6 better is everything: performance, refinement, ease of operation. It's more comfortable and easier to drive, not only on the road, but also on a race track. It quickly infuses the driver with confidence. It feels like it has more grip than the c5, and it does. It's more agile than before yet more stable. Its new brakes are excellent and, yes, it's faster. This engine sounds great and intoxicates with its acceleration. New for 2006 is an optional six-speed paddle shift automatic transmission. With either the manual or automatic, the coupe is awesome, and the convertible is really wonderful. It's a wonderful feeling and at those moments the corvette more than justifies its price.  the headline for the 2006 model year is a new, ultra-high performance z06 model. The corvette z06 is a true supercar for a price that's merely expensive, as opposed to insanely expensive. This ultra-high-performance coupe features a new 7. 0-liter ls7 v8, high-tech, weight trimming chassis features and upgraded brakes. If any $66,000 car can be called a bargain, this is the one. The z06 corvette accelerates faster, grips better and stops shorter than european sports cars that cost twice as much. lineupthe 2006 chevrolet corvette is available as a coupe or convertible.  the corvette coupe 44,190) and convertible 51,890) are powered by a 6. 0-liter v8 generating an impressive 400 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard. An optional six-speed paddle shift automatic 1,250), new for 2006, can be shifted manually with levers on the steering column.  the corvette coupe features a one-piece removable roof panel in body color (standard) or transparent plastic 750). The dual-roof option 1,400) includes both.  the convertible comes standard with a manually operated soft top; its optional power top 1,995) has a heated glass window in back.  two suspension options are offered for both the coupe and convertible. The convertible adds sport seats with adjustable lumbar support and side bolsters. The sport seats are included with preferred package 2lt 1,495) for the coupe, which also adds a rear cargo net and luggage shade.  the optional preferred package 3lt 4,795 coupe, $3,395 convertible) includes a head-up display, heated seats with position memory, a premium bose stereo with an in-dash six-cd changer and xm satellite radio hardware, a power telescoping steering column and rearview mirror with compass. The list of free-standing options is short: dvd navigation 1,695), which includes the bose audio; onstar telematics 695); and polished aluminum wheels 1,250) or dark gray painted wheels.  safety features that come standard, in addition to dual-stage front airbags, include abs, traction control and electronic stability control. We recommend the optional side airbags, but there's a rub. The side bags are included in the option packages, but not priced individually. For 2006, chevrolet has eliminated the manual passenger airbag switch in the corvette, replacing it with a system that automatically senses a child seat or small passenger and disengages or engages the passenger-side airbags accordingly.  the new 2006 corvette z06 coupe 65,800) is considerably more expensive than the standard models and raises performance to another plane. The heart of the z06 is a 7. 0-liter v8 producing 505 horsepower, with racecar features such as dry-sump lubrication and coolers for the power steering pump, gearbox and rear differential. Beyond the engine, the z06 package includes a host of high-performance components, starting with hydro-formed aluminum frame rails (rather than the steel rails used in the standard corvette). Its hardtop is fixed in place. Its brakes are upgraded, its tires are huge and it's offered only with the six-speed manual transmission. walkaroundthe corvette's bodywork was all-new for 2005, and while this sixth-generation vette shares some familial styling cues with its predecessors, it clearly is its own animal. It's less overtly aggressive, perhaps prettier (dare we say more italian?) than previous corvettes.  the exposed headlights usually draw the first comments. Since the early 1960s, corvettes used hideaway headlamps to complement their sleek designs, but advances in optics and lighting technology now enable designers to achieve those goals with exposed headlights. From an engineering standpoint, the new headlamps are better than the old hideaways: they are lighter, which means less weight hanging out over the front wheels, a critical area in terms of overhang, polar moments of inertia and all that engineering stuff that does affect handling. Trimming weight in front is always difficult in a high performance front-engine car, so this is an important reduction. The new lights also eliminate a lot of mechanical complexity and allow a higher-quality lighting setup. On top of all that, they offer better performance: chevrolet says lighting is improved 85 percent. So the exposed headlights are good thing.  more important than the headlamps, however, are the corvette's smaller proportions. The c6 is fully 5 inches shorter than the c5 (3 inches shorter in front, 2 inches shorter in the rear), and the standard models are one inch narrower. Smaller size and lighter weight improve agility. The c6 also cuts a tighter profile, and it does all that without eliminating usable interior space. In addition to the handling benefits, the more diminutive dimensions make the corvette more appealing on the tighter roads found in other parts of the world, particularly europe.  the c6 body work is smoother aerodynamically and generates less lift in front than the c5, which results in better grip and increased stability at high speeds. The sculpted fenders, sharp creases that sweep dramatically up to the planed rear deck and other aspects of the design call to mind race cars as well as jet fighters. The narrower rear end is the biggest improvement from a styling standpoint, offering more pleasing proportions. Rather than being attached directly behind the engine, the transmission is mounted behind the seats and connected to the differential. In the z06, this quest for front-rear balance extends to the weight of the battery, which is relocated from under the hood to the rear cargo area.  the z06 is distinguished from other 2006 corvettes by lots of subtle appearance tweaks, starting with the roof. The z06 roof is fixed rather than removable, to add an extra element of structural stiffness for track driving. Its fenders are wider front and rear to cover massively wide tires and rims (the rear wheels are fully 12 inches wide, or two inches wider than those on the standard vette). There are also several z06 body and chassis changes that aren't apparent to the eye. The z06 frame is made entirely of hydro-formed aluminum (the standard vettes have steel rails), with a magnesium engine cradle, and its fenders are formed from ultra-light carbon fiber. As a result, and despite a much heavier engine and drivetrain, the z06 weighs 50 pounds less than a standard corvette coupe. interiorinside the 2006 corvette is a relatively small steering wheel, measuring just 9. 4 inches in diameter, and it addresses one of the biggest gripes we had with the 2005 model. The new wheel looks less like something that belongs in a suburban and more like one that belongs in a sports car, even a ferrari. Simply walk up and pull the door handle. 2006 chevrolet cobalt review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Chevy's in the game with this solid compact. introductionwith its expressive styling and general all-around competence, the chevrolet cobalt competes effectively against the honda civic, toyota corolla, and ford focus, an impressive achievement, considering how long the competition has dominated this game.  the cobalt is the quietest, most refined small car gm has ever built. It's based on a strong, stiff platform, a key element for crisp handling and as smooth ride. The ss models use this to maximum advantage resulting in a dynamic driving experience. Quick, responsive handling and brisk acceleration performance along with a sporty sounding exhaust note make the supercharged coupe entertaining to drive, a sport compact that can more than hold its own in the class.  new for 2006 are ss sedan and coupe models with normally aspirated engines. These new ss models fit between the lt and ss supercharged models. Three different engines are available with suspensions tuned to match.  the ls, lt, and ltz models are powered by a 145-horsepower 2. 2-liter engine and use the fe1 suspension.  the ls 13,900) sedan and coupe come standard with air conditioning, automatic headlights, electric rear defogger, tilt steering column, cd player, and a driver information center. They have wind-up windows, manually operated mirrors, and cloth upholstery with height-adjustable front seats and a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat. Ls models have a body-color grille and door handles and come with front disc/rear drum brakes and 15-inch wheels and tires. The ltz sedan 18,400) is a premium model that comes standard with the automatic, upgraded audio and premium trim.  ss 18,200) coupe and sedan get a 171-horsepower 2. 4-liter engine, the fe3 sports suspension, 17-inch wheels and high performance tires. It also gets upgraded cloth, special body-color trim and other upgrades. The sport package 595) includes a brushed metal trim package for the dashboard, white-faced gauges, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, rear spoiler and 16-inch alloy wheels with pirelli tires.  safety features include dual-stage front air bags, front seatbelt pre-tensioners, rear center shoulder belts, and the latch child seat retention system. All but the ls models come standard with anti-lock brakes (abs). Head curtain side air bags 395) designed to provide head protection are optional. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, it looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks.  body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around the compound complex headlamps.  the cobalt coupe bears a resemblance in its shape to the old cavalier it replaced, while the sedan features a more modern roofline sweep. The ss coupe and sedan models have a small rear spoiler, while the ss supercharged coupe carries a huge, tall rear spoiler than says it's a serious sport compact.  cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class. interiorinside the cobalt, the design theme is simple and straightforward. Materials are decent and the fit and finish is good and comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout.  cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the leather-trimmed seats in the ss supercharged.  the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd and xm satellite radio delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall.  the heating, ventilation and defroster system worked quickly and intuitively.  the ls comes with manually operated windows. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheels on ltz and ss models are much nicer.  the sedan trunk is wide and deep with a low liftover height, and almost 14 cubic feet of capacity, more than competitive in the class, though the opening to the trunk seems relatively small. Cobalt does not use space-eating gooseneck hinges on its decklid, opting instead for simple outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts. The coupe has a very small trunk opening, making it difficult to fit a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive, especially the ss models. It's quiet for a car that retails for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. The brakes seemed a little mushy on the ls, which comes with rear drum brakes.  the 2. 2-liter engine, which is rated at 145 horsepower, was a bit of a disappointment. It was smooth, but never felt truly powerful until it was revving very high. We like the way it sounded when it revved and, paired with the manual gearbox, it offered responsive performance. summarythe chevrolet cobalt will satisfy the needs of drivers looking for economy of price, economy of operation, and a nice, quiet ride. We think it's a handsome, well-equipped car. The standard engine could offer more responsive low-end power, however. The cobalt ls and lt models are the epitome of driving excitement, however. They're not made for that. The ss models are fun to drive, particularly the cobalt ss supercharged coupe.  newcartestdrive. Com correspondent jim mccraw is based in dearborn, michigan; mitch mccullough contributed to this report. model lineupchevrolet cobalt ls 13,900); lt 16,200); ltz 18,400); ss 18,200); ss supercharged 21,400). assembled inlordstown, ohio. options as testedheated leather front bucket seats 695); side-impact head curtain air bags 395); onstar 695); xm satellite radio 325); rear spoiler 275). 2006 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Driving personality in a midsize sedan or maxx. introductionthe chevrolet malibu was launched to compete with mid-size imports such as the honda accord and toyota camry. We were surprised by the acceleration performance from the v6 and delighted by the crispness of handling on winding roads. It feels firmer than the camry, but softer than the accord, a good balance, in other words.  malibu's solid structure is based on gm's newly developed epsilon platform used by a couple of highly successful european sedans. Along with its compliant suspension, this gives the malibu a smooth, comfortable ride, yet allows for spirited driving. This is no mush-mobile. The seats are comfortable and the controls are logical and easy to use. No question, this is a highly competent sedan that's practical and easy to live with.  the malibu has something the imports don't: the maxx. The maxx is a long-wheelbase variant, whose extended roofline and rear cargo hatch suggest a sporty wagon. While malibu seems destined to disappear into a crowd, maxx looks just as determined to stand out and be noticed.  for 2006, the malibu ss models receive a new, 240-hp, 3. 9-liter v6 coupled to a sport-shift automatic. The ltz comes with a 3. 5-liter overhead-valve v6, which is optional in the lt 1560). The ss comes with a new, 3. 9-liter overhead-valve v6. Xm satellite radio and the six-disc, in-dash cd changer are optional. So is a power sunroof 800).  ss upgrades with leather-appointed sport seats; six-way power driver's seat; leather-wrapped shift knob; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls; power-adjustable pedals; p225/50r18 all-season tires on machined, ultra-bright, aluminum alloy wheels; and fog lamps. Optional on the ss are xm radio, in-dash cd changer, sunroof. Summer performance tires 150) and onstar with a one-year pre-paid subscription 695) are also optional.  maxx is built in three trim levels: lt 21,025), ltz 24,755), and ss 24,065). The maxx lt is better equipped than its sedan counterpart, and comes with cruise control; p215/60r16, all-season tires on silver-painted, steel wheels; power hatch release; fore-and-aft adjustable rear seat; and other highline features. Similar options packages are available for the maxx as for the sedan. Maxx exclusives include a rear-seat audio system with two wireless headphones and auxiliary jacks 175 on the lt, standard on the ltz and ss) and a dvd/cd rear-seat entertainment center with wireless headphones, remote control and a monitor that flips up from the front console 995).  safety features on all models include dual-stage frontal airbags; three-point seatbelts for all occupants; adjustable head restraints for all outboard seating positions and child safety seat anchors (latch). Front seat-mounted, chest-protecting side-imp. walkaroundwhere the malibu needs work is in the appearance department. Introduced as an all-new model for 2004, the malibu is better looking than the plain-looking previous model, but it's no raving beauty. That silver band across the front is designed to clearly identify this as a chevy, but it won't go down in history as a great design.  the chevrolet malibu certainly looked more contemporary than its predecessor when it first appeared in 2003, with more character and class. It also looked more substantial, giving the impression it's a more expensive car than it is. The sedan's freshness has faded, however, increasingly looking like a collection of styling cues and surface planes gathered from here and there but not all that well integrated. Meanwhile, the honda accord, toyota camry and hyundai sonata have been replaced with new models.  the maxx has held up better, with its longer wheelbase and chopped off, rather stubby, but somehow sporty back end that, perhaps thankfully, none of the others has felt compelled to emulate.  equally thankfully, the front end of the malibu has been relieved of the chrome bar spanning the full-width of the car. The chrome bar on the sedan was originally intended to establish a chevrolet styling trademark to be carried across the brand, from the smallest aveo to the lumbering suburban. (it's not included on the new, 2007 suburban, an indication of the extent to which it flopped.)  both the sedan and the maxx now wear an understated, monochromatic, single-piece fascia with almost generic lower air intake and grille, in which is centered the proper trademark, the chevy bowtie. Angular headlights perch in the top corners of the fenders. Fog lamps, when present, occupy small, polished cutouts in the lower corners.  the rear of the sedan resembles the upright rears of european cars more than any of the asian-branded competition. And indeed, the malibu shares its structure with the highly successful german opel vectra and the swedish saab 9-3, which provides a solid platform with the vital added benefit of good economies of scale.  from the center post of its roof forward, the maxx is identical to the sedan, including the updated front end. From there back, however, it's a different and more innovative vehicle, no larger than the sedan, but proportioned much differently.  while the sedan is built on a 106-inch wheelbase, the maxx rides on a wheelbase that's six inches longer, stretching to 112 inches. Yet in overall length the maxx is a half-inch shorter than the sedan. Maxx is also a half-inch taller than the sedan. Its roof is longer, its trunk shorter, increasing space for rear-seat passengers. Again, more european than asian, or even u. S., in roots. interiorthe malibu looks as substantial inside as out. With 101 cubic feet of interior space, the sedan is extremely roomy front and rear. The seats are comfortable, although they could use a deeper seat bottom cushion with more thigh support. The front passenger seat cleverly folds flat in all but the ss models for carrying long objects such as skis. The rear seat splits and folds 60/40 for versatility when mixing cargo and passengers.  the interior, the visual and tactile elements of which are shared with the maxx, is conservatively styled. There's an off switch for the daytime running lights, useful when parked with the engine running. Controls on the center dash are conveniently backlit for night driving. Heating and air conditioning controls are quite logical. The stereo and information system are a little less so, but still more readily understood than many others. We thought the wipers were a little loud. And the triangularly shaped outside mirrors are small, limiting rearward vision more than we liked.  otherwise, it's a convenient interior. Lots of nooks and crannies are available for storag. Climate Control✔ Power Windows✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Alloy Wheels

2006 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Gm's answer to chrysler's pt cruiser. introductionthe chevrolet hhr was launched as an all-new model for 2006. It's built on the platform of the winning chevy cobalt small sedan, and incorporates the cobalt's best features: engine, transmission and suspension. The hhr is on a smaller scale, but there are no bones about its retro styling.  we found the hhr to be fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus it gets decent fuel economy. The interior wasn't as functional as we'd have liked, however, and the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather. lineupthe chevrolet hhr comes in a simple ls model, plus a 1lt and 2lt. Abs comes standard on the 2lt, and is optional for the ls and 1lt 400). Electronic stability control is not available. walkaroundif there's ever been a case of a picture of a so-called suv being worth a thousand words, the hhr should be it. It looks like a 1949 panel delivery truck, with the edges smoothed over. This is the current look, whose origins are unclear, but may trace to the mitsubishi endeavor, whose flattened and edged flares were designed purely to be noticed.  speaking of the current look, the tail lamps are two round red vertical bulbs on each side. The big grille is chrome, every inch of it, and looks almost exactly like the '49 suburban grille. The headlights, however, are modern glittering wedges, containing one big beam and the turn signal.  the front and rear bumpers are molded plastic, unlike the steel in the body. Technically, they may be part of the fascia, but because they take the conspicuous shape of bumpers, they are more like square lumps extending from the extremities of the vehicle.  the glass runs neatly uninterrupted all around the vehicle, with five rectangular windows from b-pillar around the rear to b-pillar. There's something about the simple shape of these windows that gives the hhr a low-rider look, although the roof itself is relatively high, as the name declares. Roof rails are almost useless without crossbars, and we think this vehicle would look more appropriate with a functional black after-market rack anyhow.  the hhr was designed by the same man who designed the pt cruiser; he left chrysler for gm shortly afterward. We received quite a few comments on the hhr's looks, all of them favorable, some thinking it was the new pt cruiser, and others simply asking what it was. 'wow, that looks terrific, just terrific,' said one fellow. We asked what he liked about the styling. 'well, i've got a '23 dump truck,' he replied, 'which i wish i could drive on the street because it looks so cool. The tan cloth interior, despite its name of 'cashmere cloth,' looks like upholstery that might be found in an inexpensive furnished rental unit. The door pockets are small. There's a useful flip-up compartment on top of the dash, however, and there's a small glovebox.  in the rear, there's one cupholder and small door pockets. The back of the front passenger seat has a tight storage net, but not the back of the driver's seat. Even operating the driver's window, at toll booths for example, requires leaning forward and reaching down. Window switches should be on the driver's door.  the turn signal makes a loud, rapid, annoying click. The rearview mirror blocks a significant chunk of forward visibility out the smallish windshield.  the gauges and controls are, well, general motors. Superfluous chrome rings and trim, and instruments designed to look cool, rather than to be easily readable.  one good thing (even if it is bright chrome) is the door handle, an ergonomically correct ring which actuates with a horizontal inward pull.  if the hhr misses on the little interior things, the cargo storage possibilities are excellent, although the total cargo area of 55. 6 cubic feet is 8. 4 less than in the pt cruiser. The rear split 60/40 seat folds flat very easily, as does the front passenger seat; and since the 60-percent side of the rear seat is on the left, a long item like a ladder can be slipped in diagonally. The rear liftgate is one piece, and raises easily.  not surprisingly, there isn't much legroom in the rear seat. Kids are always fine, as long as three of them can share one drink. We actually carried six 10-year-old boys on a soccer team for 60 miles in the hhr, and they were all happy. Even the two who squeezed into the way back.  overall, interior-wise, the hhr isn't in the same league as the honda element. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec is a wonderful little engine. It makes 172 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque at 5000 rpm, numbers which don't indicate anything special. In fact, that torque peak suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down of the automatic transmission. Which is more than can be said of the powerful pontiac gto we tested recently.  transmission ratios have a lot to do with this efficient delivery of power. In fact, we liked the way the automatic, without a separate manual mode, could be easily manually downshifted anyhow, and how it held second gear going down that same steep, slow hill. Onto the freeway, foot on the floor, and the hhr 2lt really s. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Power Mirrors✔ Power Windows✔ Cloth Interior✔ Air Conditioning✔ MP3 Player✔ Aluminum Wheels

2006 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New structure, new styling, new interior. introductionthe impala has been changing, morphing, and maturing with the vagaries of the market since 1958 when the first one showed up as a coupe and convertible.  now, the chevrolet impala has been substantially upgraded for 2006. The 2006 impala features new and very attractive exterior styling, a new interior, and a choice of three new engines.  the new impala is a comfortable and convenient car, roomy, easy to get in, with big grab-style door handles. It's a practical sedan with innovative flip-and-fold back seats and folding rear seatbacks. And it comes well-equipped with safety features, including side-curtain airbags. The impala lt best exemplifies the model line, especially when ordered with the larger, 3. 9-liter engine, which delivers responsive performance. The ltz upgrades with leather, a very nice xm satellite radio setup and other convenience features.  an inexpensive pricing structure with loads of rebates on it puts the new impala on the shopping list for family sedans. Impala competes with the ford five hundred, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  the ss stuffs a small-block v8 into this package. It comes with the bare essentials, such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, am/fm/cd, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a bench seat, and 16-inch steel wheels. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600).  the lt is available with the 3. 5-liter v6 21,860) or a new 3. 9-liter v6 24,760), which includes 17-inch alloy wheels. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires and a performance suspension.  safety features that come standard include dual front smart air bags, and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags. Underneath, it gets a stiff new body and chassis structure, retuned suspensions with a 10-mm wider track, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires.  the ls, lt and ltz share one front end design, while the ss has a completely different nose architecture. interiorthe new impala has a lot going for it inside as well, with a completely new, cleaned-up interior, reshaped and reupholstered seats, and flip/fold rear seats.  we felt pretty comfortable overall inside the impala. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  the impala also has a new twin-brow instrument panel design that wraps around into the door panels. Ls, lt and ltz models have a wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The impala ss comes standard with metallic trim panels, with wood trim as an option. We found the panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. We found the interior materials at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the optional dual-zone climate control system can have up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. It's a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The dashboard has an expanded driver information center, now with more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the rear seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The rear seat cushions flip forward to create a covered storage area under the seat (with cushions down) and grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped. The seatback also folds down flat to create a large pass-through port to the trunk.  trunk space, at 18. 5 cubic feet, is more than competitive in the segment, and it has a huge opening for easy loading. driving impressionthe new chevrolet impala comes with a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. Variable valve timing is a first for the impala's cam-in-block v6 engines. The system changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. Thus, a system that started out on very expensive imported cars has now reached down to the lowly chevy v6 engines and made them better.  the 3. 5-liter v6 that comes on lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes on ls and ltz models produces 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. We're expecting both engines to earn fuel economy ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  with 303 horsepower, the impala ss has more power and torque than any other entry in the class, but the chassis that comes with the v8 needs taming. While we appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle, it's a challenge to launch cleanly and quickly at the same time. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steering. This system helps provide up to 8 percent better fuel economy in light-load driving conditions. However, there is a lot of pitch, dive, and body roll in this chassis, and a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the ss. Steering is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative.  the impala's front suspension is a macpherson strut coil-over-spring independent design, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar with new, taller jounce bumpers. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. The new abs includes electronic brake-force distribution. summarythe new chevrolet impala represents an improvement over previous models. The 3. 5 and 3. 9 v6 lt and ltz versions are pleasing to drive overall. While the ss cuts a conservative but dashing figure with its quiet badging and giant five-spoke, 18-inch wheels, it's got more power than it k.
