Like the love child of an aston martin and a bmw, the all-new fusion sports a wide grille with strong horizontal lines, sleek wraparound headlamps and sharp, assertive creases.  the 2013 ford fusion is a five-passenger, midsize sedan. Front-wheel drive is standard; all-wheel drive is optional.  the 2013 fusion is available with a wide range of powertrains, including gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants. The 2. 0-liter turbo delivers the best acceleration performance. Fuel economy is aided by sticking with smaller engines, as well as by incorporating systems such as electric-assist power steering, and an optional automatic start/stop feature on models equipped with the 1. 6-liter ecoboost engine. We found the start/stop feature irritatingly rough but it can be turned off.  the standard 2. 5-liter engine is epa-rated at 22/34 mpg city/highway. Models with the new 1. 6-liter engine achieve 25/37 mpg city/highway with the manual transmission and 24/37 mpg with the automatic. Available all-wheel drive and a new sport package make fine handling even better.  the cabin is comfortable and well designed with controls that are intuitive and easy to operate. An optional sport appearance package comes with a firmer suspension and sporty interior and exterior styling cues. Antilock brakes and a tire-pressure monitor are now standard, while rear obstacle detection becomes an option. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, a five-speed automatic transmission is optional 875). Some people, including us, like the aggressive, angular look of the fusion, some don't. We'd like to note that polarizing designs are often more successful than bland designs that neither offend nor excite anyone. In short, we think this is a good-looking car.  the styling features large headlights and a bold grille. Three thick chrome bars across the grille have a razor-like appearance and make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  when the fusion was first introduced, ford executives said its three-bar horizontal grille would become the signature styling cue for ford cars. Since then it has been seen on concept vehicles, as well as the edge crossover vehicle and the new taurus and newly restyled focus. A fold along the top edges of the front fenders runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the rear deck.  the fusion features a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look.  the overall effect is pleasing. The chrome on the car contrasts nicely with the body work, especially on dark-colored models or red. Gaps between body panels seem a bit larger than those on some of the other cars in the class.  all-wheel-drive models have awd badging on the rear deck. While the 17-inch wheels that drive the awd sel models are the same design, they have a tell-tale hash mark to identify all-wheel-drive models.  the sport appearance package features a black chrome grille, color-keyed fog lights, a unique rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, and most notably, 18-inch aluminum wheels on lower profile tires.  the fusion fits into the ford car lineup between the compact focus and the big taurus sedan. It has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares its basic floorpan with the mazda6, its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says fusion has a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good because a rigid structure is the key to a smooth ride and responsive handling. interiorthe cabin of the ford fusion is comfortable and benefits from straightforward controls.  the front seats manage to be slightly soft, yet supportive enough for long drives. A standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel and the six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, standard on the se and sel models, helps drivers get comfortable, be they short or tall.  in keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting. The lighter colored interiors look friendlier.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent-sized buttons make the radio and climate controls easy to operate. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  se and sel models have a front passenger seatback that folds down, making it possible to haul extra-long items. Heated front seats are an option on sel models with leather seating. Fusions equipped with the new sport appearance package have red seat inserts (cloth or leather) and red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and center console.  the new sync communications and entertainment system can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players. Voice commands and/or steering wheel buttons can be used to control all functions. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift-over height, making it easy to load groceries, luggage or cargo. Additional refinement comes in the form of new interior fabrics along with changes to interior and exterior trim. New options include heated seats, a new traction control and anti-lock brake system (abs) package. The zx5 five-door hatchback is now available in three trim levels.  the 170-horsepower svt versions offer thrilling acceleration performance, sporty handling, and excellent brakes, yet give up nothing in terms of practicality. All ride on the same 103-inch wheelbase and offer similar driving characteristics.  sedans are the most popular of the focus models. The zx3 12,680) is a sport compact, and comes with all the requisite hardware: the 130-horsepower twin-cam engine, 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels, fog lights, and a cd/mp3 player. The ztw wagon is an enthusiast's sport wagon with 16-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, and a six-disc in-dash cd changer. Both feature the ford special vehicle team's 170-j[ version of the 2. 0-liter engine. Focus svt models boast a getrag six-speed manual transmission, svt-tuned suspension, special trim, including a rear spoiler.  three engines are available. The 110-hp 2. 0-liter engine with a single overhead-cam and two valves per cylinder is standard on focus lx and se models. The system monitors the car's behavior while cornering, checking the steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rate. Advancetrac uses the abs and traction control system to help it accomplish this. The system intervenes progressively so that the drier is hardly aware that it has been activated. Advancetrac may be turned off by pressing a button on the instrument panel, but comes back on whenever the vehicle is started. Available as a standalone option for 2003 is traction control 115), which improves stability in wintry conditions but does not offer the sophisticated accident-avoidance enhancements of advancetrac. Abs, which helps the driver maintain control in a panic brak. walkaroundthe ford focus is a wild looking car. The hatchback versions look wilder and sportier than the sedan. But all models feature edgy european styling with sweeping arcs and crisp creases.  large pie-section headlamps give the front end a distinctive appearance, and painted gray headlamp surrounds upgrade the appearance for 2003. Several models have fog lamps in the grille opening below the front bumper. There's a similar, but smaller opening above the bumper that houses the turn signals. Both are outlined by arcs. The front and rear fenders are highlighted with geometric curves creased into the sheetmetal.  the roofline is highly arched, particularly noticeable when parked next to another car. The roofline is truncated just aft of the rear axle line. Wedge-shaped tail lamps set in the c-pillars enliven an otherwise plain rear end of the zx3 and zx5. Ford claims the tail lamps are more noticeable in that location and reduce repair costs in minor accidents. However, the sedan and wagon have conventionally placed tail lamps, so we'll accept the unique shape and location as distinctive and effective styling.  lower bodyside pvc coating provides protection from stone dings on all models, and the underbody gets pvc coating as well. Clearcoat paint is standard across the board.  zx3 and lx have black rather than body-color bodyside protective molding, but this is offset on the zx3 by black rocker panels. The door handles on all models are black as well. The door handles on black cars blends in, but black also masks the distinctive lines of the focus that are accentuated by the brighter colors. High-series models get new body-color decklid trim for 2003. interiorthe 2003 ford focus rides more quietly (by a significant 2 decibels) than last year as a result of improved body sealing, sprayed on underbody sound deadening, and thicker carpeting. New seating fabrics and trim details upgrade the interior further for 2003.  the focus is designed from the inside out for maximum interior space within the confines of a compact body. Elevated seating height adds comfortable legroom.  the front seats are cushy comfy, well bolstered for side support. The seats have an exceptionally high hip point, 20 inches above the ground. The advantages of this seating include a better view down the road, plus more effective leg room front and rear. The high roofline provides lots of head room and makes entry and exit easier. Manual height adjustment allows almost everyone to find a comfortable position behind the wheel and an easy arm's length away from the manual shifter. Ford says it tested both fabrics extensively for color and wear durability, simulating 10 years and 100,000 miles of use and exposure to the sun.  the dash is a collection of arcs, a theme that reinforces the exterior design. The instrument panel is covered by an asymmetrically curved and sharply creased bezel. High series models feature a silver instrument cluster. A 7000-rpm tachometer flanks a 140-mph speedometer in the zx5. Both instruments are round and easily readable, clearly marked with white numerals on black, though the tach has no redline.  the center dash panel is formed by an arc that sweeps upward across the dash to the right side of the car and an inverted parabola. In the zx5, zts, and ztw it's finished in brushed aluminum instead of black. The radio fits into the top of this area. Zx3 and zx5 models come standard with mp3 players. Also available is a six-disc cd player. Snuggled into the top left is a 12-volt power outlet and trinket tray. Circular ventilation controls feature the edgy styling with buttons styled to fit the room available. The trunk release, on the left end of the dash, is triangular as well, shaped to fit into the intersection of the arcs outlining the instrument panel.  with its asymmetrical design, the interior looks both informal and rich at the same time. Control knobs all have distinctive shapes for easy identification. Rotary controls are rubberized for pleasing soft-touch operation. Ford's magic new number. introductionthe five hundred is ford's interpretation of the modern american sedan. But ford's new flagship is larger and more substantial and comes with much more standard equipment.  the five hundred boasts a body structure and safety technology developed by volvo and first used on volvo's s80 luxury sedan and then for its highly acclaimed xc90 sport utility vehicle. Ford acquired the swedish automaker famous for its passenger-protecting innovations in 1999. When it came time to develop the five hundred (and its upscale cousin, the mercury montego), ford imported volvo's best structural and safety engineers to work on the project. The five hundred is available with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter giving it more stable handling and better traction, particularly in inclement weather.  ford developed the five hundred as a successor to the taurus and to compete with cars such as the brand new chrysler 300, the venerable toyota avalon, and the aging chevrolet impala. The driver sits relatively high, and the roomy front seats offer a commanding view of the road. Back-seat passengers will not complain about being cramped, either. The back seats fold down to increase cargo capacity. The six-speed automatic transmission that comes standard helps the engine deliver responsive performance and good fuel economy. All-wheel-drive models come with a continually variable transmission that performs the same feat. lineupthe ford five hundred is available in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited.  each is powered by a 3. 0-liter v6 called the duratec 30, which is tuned to provide 203 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, the focus makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in its class. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and a 6-speed automatic is optional, with selectshift manual mode an option for the automatic. The standard 2. 0-liter engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque.  epa fuel economy estimates for the 2013 ford focus are 26/36 mpg city/highway with 5-speed manual, 28/38 mpg with 6-speed automatic.  the new 2013 focus st features a more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine that cranks out an impressive 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Focus st comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and sport-tuned suspension. Focus st comes as a hatchback only with a special body kit. The sporty focus st is rated 23/32 mpg city/highway.  the focus electric is powered by a 107-kilowatt electric motor that has an estimated range of 76 miles per full charge and an epa energy efficiency equivalent rating of 110 mpge city and 99 mpge highway or 105 mpge combined. It's an electric car, so gas stations are a thing of the past. The focus electric competes most closely with the leaf, although the mitsubishi i-miev is a smaller, less expensive all-electric alternative. The soft materials are clearly high quality, while the hard trim looks slathered on. There's excellent legroom in front, but rear legroom is only moderate. The gauges are easy to read and include a big tachometer and speedometer with cool blue needles.  the 2013 focus uses the myford touch connectivity interface powered by microsoft's sync. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it was designed that way, but it doesn't always work that way. We found this latest version of myford touch difficult to use.  on the road, the focus is exceptionally quiet. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with luxury-levels of sound insulation practically everywhere, including the doors, windshield, carpet and headliner. Ride quality was smooth and soft. We found the standard engine extremely smooth with plenty of power. The focus electric comes with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 60/40 folding rear seats, myford touch and myford mobile interfaces, with two unique driving screens, rearview camera, reverse sensing system, mykey, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, rearview camera, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe ford focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The hatchback looks especially aerodynamic. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous (pre-2012) focus.  active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the chevrolet cruze are doing this, as well.  ford calls the distinctive grille split-trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford.  sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps make the focus look being safe and volvo-like.  the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs.  the focus chassis uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorthe first thing we notice about the focus is its seats. Focus models have had comfortable seats for years tne the current models come standard in sturdy fabric, with leather optional. The seats in the focus are much better than those in the chevrolet cruze.  the interior of the focus feels like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, we could easily imagine being a pilot with all those dials, switches, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the center stack, and led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors. The focus electric feels even more futuristic, with two screens that show information about driving efficiency, charge capacity and other do-dads related to the electric powertrain.  the gauges on the dashboard and instrument panel are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. However, we haven't been in a base s model, maybe it's got a more spartan interior missing the overkill trim. Ford says it's designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver. New seven-spoke wheels add a fresh look to the 2003 models.  for 2003, more features come standard, including power windows and door locks, a tilt steering column and floor mats. Optional trim packages include a new sport package for the ses sedan. The wagon is available in se 21,345) and sel 23,170) versions. A choice of two 3. 0-liter v6 engines is available. This 3. 0-liter 12-valve v6 uses a traditional overhead-valve design. The vulcan v6 is rated at 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note. A flexible fuel version of the vulcan engine can run on e-85 ethanol, regular unleaded gasoline or any combination of the two in the same 18-gallon fuel tank.  ses is a popular choice and comes in standard and deluxe variations. Ses adds an in-dash single cd player, front bucket seats with six-way power and a manual lumbar adjustment on the driver's side. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than soft, and firm is usually best on long drives.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, but is set up well for two as the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. A ventilation duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the se wagon and ses and sel sedans, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items.  with its 60/40 split rear seats folded down, the roomy taurus wagon has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cubic feet of cargo; with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. Behind them.  . driving impressionthe ford taurus is a genuinely satisfying car to drive. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Powerful front-wheel-drive cars like the taurus sel need traction control to reduce wheel spin and provide better control of the car.  the taurus chassis is a good match for this forceful duratec drivetrain. The fully independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, unusual in a family sedan; when pushed in the corners, it remains stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information. Braking performance was much smoother than that of a dodge intrepid tested at the same time.  with its excellent chassis and duratec power, the ford taurus comes close to being a sports sedan for the price of a family mid-size sedan.  . summaryfor several years, the taurus has been the bowl of chocolate-chip mint in a sea of plain vanilla. While most sedans in the mid-size class seem designed to blend into the scenery, the taurus stands out like a wildebeest in plaid pajamas.  not only does the taurus look like it came from the future, it drives like it came from europe. Yet it comes with a price tag that's quite reasonable. Two engines are available, and both deliver a vigorous response, though we recommend the newer duratec engine.
