All-new small utility vehicle seats seven. introductionthe kia rondo is capable of carrying seven adults, yet it's small. We found the ride, handling and brakes of the kia rondo excellent. We found it to be strong, offering good acceleration performance for passing on two-lane roads, and it's smooth and quiet when cruising down the highway. It's rated 18/26 mpg and delivers more thrust more smoothly and adds just $1,000 to the retail price, making it a bargain.  the seats are comfortable whether ordered in cloth or leather. The driver sits relatively high and the rondo feels like neither a car nor a sport utility. In addition to people, it can haul lots of stuff; just flip down the back two rows of seats.  launched as a 2007 model, the kia rondo has no significant changes for 2008. The lx is also available without air conditioning, remote entry and cruise control 16,395).  the rondo ex 19,195) adds a higher-grade cloth interior with leather trim, 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome grille, door handles and molding, foglamps, heated mirrors, windshield de-icer, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, lights for the vanity mirrors, and a cd/mp3 six-speaker sound system. The chin fascia holds projector-beam foglamps on the ex and a dark horizontal air opening below the grille.  the rondo ex has chrome slats in the grille, chrome door handles and a chrome strip on the side, but the cheaper lx, with a black grille and no chrome on the side, looks cleaner.  the pillars are black, creating an unbroken glass effect with tinted windows. The rear glass is a simple large rectangle, a bit wider on the bottom and smoothly sloped. It doesn't open separately.  the wheelbase is long when compared to the total length, resulting in short front and rear overhangs (the part of the car that extends ahead of or behind the wheels). That helps maximize interior space.  the five-spoke alloy wheels are simple, silver, and individual, with each of the five spokes having a stylish twist. interiorthe kia rondo has a versatile interior. Counting all the ways the three rows divide, recline and fold, kia cites some 32 different seating configurations with the optional third-row seat.  since roomy seating is what makes the rondo special, let's start with a tale of the tape: leg room in the front, middle and third rows is 41. 3, 38. 2 and 31. 3 inches, compared to 40. 7, 35. 2 and 30. 7 in the mazda5, and 41. 8, 38. 3 and 30. 0 in the rav4. But inches expressed as numbers on a page aren't necessarily conclusive. It's cozy back there, not the best place for adults. On each side of the third row, there's a good-sized storage bin with a flip-up top like a console, and one cupholder. The second-row seats recline, as well.  for cargo carrying, both the second and third rows fold flat easily; the second-row seat cushion folds forward and the seatback flops down, with the headrest flipping back. Each side of each row folds separately, so a long space can be created on one side of the car, suitable for, say, a short kayak. With all the rear seats down, there's a lot of cargo space. With the third row in use, there's only room behind the seat for a couple of brief cases. The cloth looks better in gray than beige: less old-fashioned. The perforated gray leather seats added a real touch of class, along with $1000 to the price. The driver's seat is high and affords good visibility; from behind the wheel, the rondo feels like neither an suv nor a car, which is what a crossover is about. The climate ducts are round and balanced, and the knobs are easy to understand and operate. The leather-wrapped steering wheel on the ex feels great, and there are steering wheel controls, as well.  cubby storage includes a compartment on top of the dashboard, more convenient for the driver than the glovebox because it's easily reachable. For its part, the glovebox is a good size. The automatic shift lever is located up on the center stack, giving more room for the console between the seats, which is deep and square. The 2. 7-liter v6 produces 182 horsepower and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission with sportmatic. We played with the sportmatic and found it well-programmed. We ran the rondo up to 80 mph where it was quiet and smooth, feeling like no more than 70. We drove it like a sports car over twisty roads, and we could barely hear the engine when the transmission downshifted for acceleration; it was a bit slow to kick down into second gear, but was fine at higher speeds. The manual upshifts at 5800 rpm were sharp.  both models use the same suspension, although the shocks are tuned a bit firmer with the v6 because of the extra weight. The rio has been a benchmark for subcompacts the past few years. Its redesign is all the more momentous as the new rio models join a wave of exciting new subcompacts that are hitting the streets.  that wave includes the new toyota yaris, nissan versa, and honda fit, along with all-new versions of the chevrolet aveo and hyundai accent. These subcompacts are smaller than compact cars, such as the toyota corolla and honda civic, but the newest subcompacts excel at space utilization and some are offering premium features.  indeed, subcompacts have never been better and the new kia rio sedan and rio5 hatchback are perfect examples. In addition to being inexpensive, they are stylish little cars with spacious interiors. They deliver sprightly performance, great fuel economy and agile handling. Kia has substantially improved the quality of its cars with the newest models, according to j. Power and associates latest initial quality (iqs) numbers. It's a sophisticated modern engine, complete with dual overhead camshafts and variable valve timing. Safety features that come on all models include front seatbelt pre-tensioners along with six airbags: dual frontal, front seat side-impact and full-coverage side-impact curtain.  the rio sedan is available as a base model or in lx trim. The rio5 five-door hatchback is available exclusively in sx trim.  the base rio sedan 10,570) comes strictly with a manual transmission, wind-up windows, manual door locks. There's no radio or air conditioning, no power steering. The sx hatchback has the same major features as the lx sedan but with some sporty additions that include a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, metal grain trim, metal pedals, rear roof-mounted spoiler and lower profile tires on 15-inch alloy wheels. Factory installed options are the same as for the lx sedan. walkaroundthere is nothing wimpy about either of the kia rio models. In terms of styling, they're a far cry from the old rio models.  the sedan has a solid looking front end with a strong nose and big headlights that give it a purposeful appearance. The crease along the side of the car below the big windows ends up wrapping around the trunk, giving the sedan more the look of a european sports sedan than that of a korean econobox.  all models come with hefty body-color side moldings that do not detract too badly as they align nicely with the wrap around edges of the front and rear bumpers. The fender flares actually look a shade too big on the base and lx models, which have skinnier tires. The fender flares fill out much better on the rio5 sx with its lower-profile tires and 15-inch wheels.  the rio5 looks taller than the sedan but it is actually the same overall height. It's a couple of inches shorter in height than the chevrolet aveo and scion xa, its closest rivals. The rear of the rio5 is distinctive with backup lights that wrap around the taillights and almost look like part of the body. The c-pillar curves down to the taillights and the tailgate has full width gals making the back more attractive than on many hatchbacks. interiorthe interior of the 2007 kia rio represents a big improvement over the old rio. The radio is well positioned in the center stack with large buttons and knobs for changing stations or volume. Three big knobs for the climate control are mounted on a bulge in the center that brings them closer to the driver's hands.  the seats are on the soft side and don't offer the lateral support we'd expect on a sports sedan. The rear seatback folds down in a 60/40 split for added versatility in all but the base model. According to kia, the total interior volume of the rio is greater than that of the honda civic and toyota corolla even though they are officially in the next size up segment. In practical terms, they are all pretty close. The rio5 has a cargo carrying a capacity of almost 50 cubic feet with the seats folded down which is substantially more than in other hatchbacks of this size.  minor touches such as the metal pedals, leather wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob on the rio5 sx will appeal to sporty drivers. Most drivers will probably not consciously notice these things but they will certainly help instill a better feeling about the car for them. driving impressionafter driving three varieties of the kia rio on highways and freeways around seattle, we came away impressed with the new models.  we spent time in an lx automatic and a rio5 sx manual. We enjoyed shifting the manual as it definitely makes for a more sporty experience. However, the lx with the automatic transmission was no slouch. Cars in this class traditionally suffer a big performance and fuel economy hit with an automatic, but the new rio confirms that modern transmissions have largely addressed these deficiencies.  kia claims it is making its cars more sporty and athletic than the hyundai accent, the rio's sibling. The rio is far from being a sporty car, but the sx handled nimbly without too much body lean or sloppy handling. The lx with its skinner 14-inch tires was not quite as secure, although most drivers would not complain.  the power steering, which stiffens up as the engine speed increases, felt taught with just the right amount of feel dialed in. We found the rio5 sx the most enjoyable with its hatchback versatility and sporty/luxury touches. The rio comes with a comprehensive set of passive safety features. Additional colors available later in the model year will include flame-emulating ignition, denim blue and bright white ghost.  the soul was well on its way to being built when the latest scion xb was introduced, and there might have been some omgs around the kia design studios, because the two cars look a lot alike. But look closer, and the soul will stand out. Driving around miami, the soul got lots of positive looks.  kia calls the shape a reverse wedge greenhouse, adding that the soul looks like it's wearing a pair of wraparound sunglasses. Because the rear windows are narrower than the fronts, there appears to be a downward rearward slope to the roof, but it's a clever illusion achieved by the rising beltline below the windows. There's a final and small third side window, an upside-down wedge to complete the shape.  bold chiseled wheel arches give the soul strength. The corners are nicely rounded, erasing some of the inherent boxiness. The grille is small and tidy, the soul's mouth no bigger than needed so suck in air for the engine (unlike so many, from audi to dodge truck). The headlights are stylish, wrapping over the intersection of front fascia, fender and hood. There's an artificial black vent on each front fender behind the wheel, a nice touch. A black horizontal ding strip on the doors doesn't do much for cleanliness, but it has a function. The liftgate and rear window are clean and smooth (and darkly cool when tinted), with an indented handle under a kia oval logo and a stylish chrome soul badge off to the side. interiormaybe the nicest thing about the interior is that kia hasn't tried to do anything too trendy except maybe for the black-and-beige houndstooth-like upholstery on the upper seatbacks of the soul! It seems a little out of place when listening to talk radio, however. It's fun.  the front bucket seats are comfortable, good for long trips, and the interior vinyl trim is fine. There are bottle holders in the front door pockets plus cupholders in the console with its own deep compartment, a huge two-level glovebox, map nets on the front seatbacks, a trap-door compartment on the dash (that's indented so things don't slide around), and grab handles over every door. There are auxiliary audio, ipod, and usb port connections, and two 12-volt outlets.  it has a nice steering wheel, with the usual standard and extra optional controls. The three-ring instrument panel looks nice and clean with an eave so the gauges are readable in the sun. The vertical oval center stack looks great with business-like knobs and buttons. The 60/40 rear seats drop flat in a heartbeat. There's an excellent compartment under the cargo space floor, and below that a space-saver spare tire. Interior passenger space is good, but it eats up some cargo volume, compared to the larger scion xb and smaller honda fit. driving impressionthe soul is nimble and fun to drive. We didn't get any seat time in the base model with the 1. 6-liter engine having 122 horsepower and 115 pound-feet of torque, but kia says there won't be many of those models sold.  the 2. 0-liter engine features cvvt, or continuously variable valve timing. It makes 142 horsepower with a good 137 pound feet of torque peaking at a fairly high 4600 rpm; but we found that it pulled fine, if gently, at 2000 rpm, even with the manual transmission in third gear. With the manual, it will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 8. 8 seconds, which isn't bad. (we figure 8. 0 seconds is the dividing line between quick and sluggish.)  the manual gearbox comes with a clutch that's smooth, both from a standing start and upshifting. For around-town driving, it fills the bill; and out on the highway, it's smooth on the upshifts and doesn't kick down too much.  the power steering is hydraulic rather than electric, and does not feel as heavy in the hands as the scion xb. It makes the whole car feel lighter, which it is by about 250 pounds. Don't expect it to feel like a sports car, but then it's not intended to.  the suspension is good, compliant, okay over speed bumps, and not once did we hit any jagged spots. We climbed into the sport model with its firmer shocks and springs, and couldn't feel much if any difference in comfort. However, we were in miami, so there were no corners to challenge the soul. Kia says the sport suspension mostly reduces body roll. The brakes were firm and tight.  however, one thing we did notice in the sport was the louder exhaust. It's the same system, but something about the manual transmission makes the soul louder and more visceral feeling, with more vibration too. We've noticed this in other cars. The redline is 6000 rpm, and it gets there nicely. summarythe kia soul is a new model that should find a niche that the scion xb seems to have left behind. The reverse wedge styling does much to bring distinction to a basic box. The interior gets an a. The engine, automatic transmission, steering and ride all leave no room for complaint.  s.
