2008 lincoln mkz review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In style and engineering, it's an upscale sibling to the ford fusion and mercury milan.    the mkz began a new direction for lincoln: luxury vehicles designed to engage the driver. The mkz succeeds, managing the difficult trick of delivering a ride that is generally comfortable with handling that makes it interesting and gratifying to drive quickly on a challenging country road.  the mkz is powered by a strong, 263-hp v6 driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available. And mkz's major standard equipment compares favorably with the best cars in this class.  for 2008, lincoln has made several popular options standard, including heated and cooled leather seats, and sirius satellite radio. New standard features include a reverse sensing system and a hands-free, voice-activated communications and entertainment system that ford calls sync.  overall, the mkz is well rounded. It's suitable for day-to-day commuting even on the midwest's broken streets, comfy for long-distance cruising on an interstate, and playful during a quick trip along a two-lane road through the mountains. It has plenty of power, but it uses regular fuel and delivers decent gas mileage. Surprisingly, however, the mkz does not offer electronic stability control.  the mkz has collected some impressive accolades. Among them: when it was introduced as a 2007 model, it ranked highest in the j. Power and associates initial quality study for premium cars. Its 3. 5-liter v6 has been named one of ward's 10 best engines. Its thx ii-certified stereo was voted best audio by pc magazine. And its navigation system was ranked no. 1 in j. A tire pressure monitor has also been added for 2008.  the mkz achieves acceptable ratings in heavy frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the insurance institute for highway safety, on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor. Some of the mkz's major competitors have good ratings in these tests. The mkz lacks electronic stability control. walkaroundthe lincoln mkz is styled in a conservative fashion, creating a prim, proper effect. The one exception is its wide chrome grille, which lincoln is using across its line to instill brand identity. Lincoln's wide, split-waterfall motif first appeared on the 1938 zephyr, so it's certainly appropriate for the mkz, originally launched as the lincoln zephyr, to wear it.  the lincoln is brightened by its jewelry: quad-beam halogen headlights (with hid units optional), bright-metal accents at the beltline and on the mirror caps, and chromed exhaust tips. Handsome 17-inch wheels contribute to mkz's purposeful stance. interiorthe lincoln mkz cabin is comfortable and luxurious. The interior is pleasant, convenient and reasonably quiet.  the cabin looks more upscale than that in the ford fusion and mercury milan, which share the mkz's underpinnings and some major mechanical components. The trim plastics look best in lighter colors. All in all, the mkz interior doesn't come across as shameless luxury as much as comfortably well-to-do, which is pretty much the standard for this class.  the controls for heating, cooling and the stereo are all easy to find and use. Storage is adequate.  the navigation system works well. The video screen is smaller than many, but it's easy to figure out without excessive reliance on the owner's manual. In short, it's comparable to other cars in its class.  trunk capacity is rated at 15. 8 cubic feet, which is more than many cars in this class. The trunk lid swings high for easy access, and the fold-down rear seat allows some flexibility for hauling more.  forward and over-the-shoulder visibility is acceptable. The high rear deck limits visibility immediately behind the mkz when backing up. The reverse-sensing system helps with this, providing an audible gauge of the distance between the mkz and whatever is behind it. driving impressionthe lincoln mkz comes from a 3. 5-liter v6, introduced for 2007, that delivers 263 horsepower, on par with the nissan maxima and infiniti g35. Moreover, the lincoln engine delivers full power on regular 87-octane gas, and was epa-rated at 18/28 mpg city/highway. This new engine benefits from the efficiency of a six-speed automatic transmission.  the lincoln's 3. 5-liter engine delivers great acceleration in the instances most drivers need it. It doesn't turn the mkz into a rocket, but acceleration is more than acceptable for any reasonable task, including a quick merge onto a busy interstate. And it's satisfying just to feel the rush of power. The duratec 3. 5-liter is smooth and fairly quiet.  the six-speed automatic cannot be shifted manually, feature some drivers like. Moreover, lincoln could improve the control program for a quicker response at low speeds. From a dead stop, or when traveling at 50 mph, the transmission works great. But at 10 mph, it's a different story. Creeping out of a parking lot, for example, the transmission will shift up a gear or two, apparently to save fuel. But when the driver approaches the street and hits the gas for a hole in traffic, the transmission doesn't want to kick back down to first gear. The mkz bogs a bit, and the anticipated acceleration isn't there.  we like the handling of this car. On a rough surface the mkz does a reasonably good job of shielding its occupants from broken pavement and poorly repaired potholes. But the engineers were clever enough to combine that ride with handling that is reassuring and satisfying. Despite having much of its weight up front, the all-wheel-drive model we tested was reasonably quick to change direction and head into a turn, lacking the stubborn, nose-heavy feeling of some all-wheel-drive cars.  the steering has a of weight to it for positive, satisfying response. Yet it doesn't feel heavy when pulling into a parking spot. And there's no loose, sloppy feeling when the mkz is pointed straight ahead. Turn the wheel just a little bit and the chassis begins to respond immediately, with no dead spot.  the brake pedal has a nice, progressive feel, and the brakes deliver more stopping power than the typical driver will ever use short of an emergency situation.  all-wheel drive is a great benefit when driving in snow or hard rain. We consider all-wheel drive a safety feature because it improves handling stability in foul weather. It can also be a huge help in getting up a slick hill. The system normally operates as front-wheel drive, but sends power to the rear wheels if the front tires begin to lose grip. On loose gravel, we found it worked as advertised when accelerating hard from a stop. summarythe 2008 lincoln mkz is a likeable midsize sedan. All-wheel drive is available for drivers who need foul weather capability.  chris jensen reported to newcartestdrive. 2010 lincoln mkz review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improvements make for a solid entry-luxury sedan. introductionthe 2010 lincoln mkz is a five-passenger luxury sedan that illustrates lincoln's ambition to make cars that equal or exceed lexus and acura in quality, driving dynamics, technology and features.  we think lincoln has succeeded. The mxz is an undeniably pleasant car to occupy and operate. It is a mid-size car with a spacious, understated interior, and a well-balanced combination of ride comfort and easy handling. The mxz retains the traditional domestic notions of practicality and comfort, such as a large trunk, ample leg and hip room front and rear, and builds on it with an infusion of sound proofing, safety technology and audio capable of shock and awe. A sports suspension package and all-wheel drive are available for sportier handling and all-weather capability.  while driving the mkz, we found it stable and calm through the corners. It has a driving performance envelope that overlaps that of sporty cars. The v6 revs to 6750 rpm and we found engine and transmission responsive when called upon. The mkz is more of a luxury car than a sporty car, but it can do 0-60 in 7. 1 seconds, which is fairly quick.  for 2010, mkz has been upgraded. An all-new interior design results in a plusher, quieter cabin with higher quality fit and finish. Improved performance comes from a retuned 3. 5-liter v6 and a new six-speed automatic. The suspension has been tuned for improved ride and handling. The available all-wheel-drive system has been retuned for better traction and lower noise, vibration and harshness. The styling has been updated with a new front end, a new decklid with led taillamps. The mkz is the successor to the lincoln zephyr, launched as a 2006 model.  the 2010 mkz looks decidedly similar to the lincoln flagship mks. The navigation package 2,495) includes voice-activated navigation system cd/dvd/mp3 player, internal hard drive for map, 10gb music jukebox, sirius travel link, blind spot information system with cross traffic alert, rear-view camera.  safety features include dual front air bags, front and rear side impact air bags, and front and rear side curtain airbags; advancetrac with electronic stability control (esc); sos post-crash alert; traction control; tire pressure monitoring system; anti-lock braking system (abs); child safety locks (rear) latch car-seat belt system; reverse sensing system. Optional safety features include all-wheel drive, rearview camera, blind spot information system with cross traffic alert. walkaroundthe mkz clearly borrows lincoln design cues from other vehicles in the brand, sharing the strong split-wing grille, high compound headlamps and prominent placement of the lincoln star on the front quarter panels. In the mkz, the grille is slightly narrower, and the lines somewhat more fluid than the more rigidly defined, cast-in-concrete bodywork of its big brother, the mks. The front grille, in particular, is designed to create a distinct presence in the company of other cars; a high belt line adds a look of substance and heft.  there is judicious use of chrome on the door handles, fog lamp bezels, moldings, mirrors and exhaust tips. Window glass is solar tinted. Led tail lamps are wide and broad, extending across the rear deck and into the quarter panels, adding further emphasis to a wide stance. All-season radial tires on nine-spoke, 17-inch wheels are visually proportionate to the wheel wells and wheelbase.  the end result is a strong lincoln family resemblance both coming and going, and a car that appears modern, technically endowed, and well planted.  ford and lincoln have begun to introduce capless refueling systems under the brand name easyfuel. We've found it works well and creates one less thing to lose: the fuel cap. interiorthe lincoln mkz interior has a conservative design sensibility, conveying the virtues of simplicity. There is a distinct lack of clutter for a car with a complete suite of convenience features and technology.  seating might be the best part of the interior. The seats are generously wide, allowing easy entry and exit, both up front and to the rear seating area. They are 10-way adjustable, with power lumbar, and have heated/cooled seating surfaces as standard equipment. Armrests are wide and well placed, and functional grab handles are located at every door.  quality materials are evident. The wood is real wood, the aluminum is real aluminum, and the leather is real leather. Plastic, what there is of it, has been well textured and does not suggest that it will appear cheap two years down the line. Controls and buttons are low relief, within easy reach, and remarkably intuitive. The navigation screen, at 8 inches, could be a little bigger but it's well located at the top of the center stack and the software makes use of the entire screen.  instrumentation, consistent with the rest of the interior, includes speedometer and tach, a message center, with low oil pressure indicator. A universal garage door opener is standard.  there is also a voice-activated hands-free in-car communication and entertainment system developed by ford and microsoft. The system integrates bluetooth-enabled mobile phones and digital media players for hands-free phone and music selection. It also enables further communications, such as 911 assist and vehicle health report, which are provided with no monthly fees.  the standard audio system, with nine speakers and cd/mp3 play capability, will be perfectly suitable for most drivers, especially considering how quiet the mkz is inside. However, there is a 10-speaker thx ii surround sound system that has a 10-gigabite hard drive, enough for 2400 mp3 tracks, and plays dvds with home-theater sound depth. We can attest to the fact that it can play music or movies at very high volume without distorting, and that the sound in the back seat is just as good as the sound up front. driving impressionwe had a day driving an mkz prototype in southern california, from laguna beach to lake elsinore on the infamous ortega highway. The ortega highway is a two-lane mountain pass, well known for falling rocks and frequent driver-error-induced accidents as it snakes along the side of a deep canyon. That gave us a chance to notice how the mkz behaves in everyday driving. That means we had a power moonroof, the premium thx ii audio, the navigation package and more.  with the engine running, the cabin of the mkz is conspicuously quiet, which helps create an atmosphere of sanctuary inside. There are some road surfaces that bring through a little more tire noise than others, but throughout the day it was possible to maintain conversation at normal speaking tones, and listen to the news at very low volume. Lincoln spokesmen told us that the cabin is quieter than the lexus es 350 at speed and on rough roads, and that they have data to prove it. We looked at their charts and while the measuring criteria are rather complex, the bottom line is very simple. Still, the awd system alone was a tangible handling benefit as we powered through corners, with no apparent torque steer or sense of biasing from wheel to wheel. The car stays flat and composed when pushed into a corner, tracking cle.
