2011 acura tsx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New wagon joins updated sedan lineup. introductionthe sharply creased acura tsx is something like the swiss army knife among smaller, near-luxury sedans, and now among wagons, too. It does a lot of jobs well. If it's not the best car in its class by any particular measure, the tsx is good by many measures. It's very easy to live with in all locales and loaded with relative value. for 2011, the acura tsx sedan gets a slight facelift. There are also subtle interior updates for the 2011 tsx sedans, along with aerodynamic improvements and engine efficiencies that raise epa mileage ratings by 1 mpg across the board. yet the big development is the new 2011 tsx sport wagon. With more than 60 cubic feet of easily accessed cargo space, the wagon makes a nice, quieter alternative to a small suv or crossover. It delivers almost as much utility, better reflexes and better fuel economy than just about any suv extant. the 2011 acura tsx comes standard with heated leather-trimmed seats, power everything, dual-zone climate control, a great sounding high-watt stereo, electronic stability control and a full array of airbags. It scores well in government and insurance industry crash tests. The acura tsx competes primarily with the audi a4, bmw 3 series, and lexus is, and to a lesser extent with the mercedes-benz c-class, saab 9-3 and volkswagen cc. the tsx uses front-wheel drive, whereas true sports sedans and many of its competitors are rear-wheel drive. Regardless, this acura remains one of the better-handling front-drive sedans available. It's grown bigger, heavier and more luxurious over the last few years, and as a result it plods a bit more than it once did. It's rated at 201 horsepower, but it revs happily and, with the 6-speed manual, it's the most fun tsx to drive. It also gets great fuel economy, delivering up to 22 mpg city, 31 highway, according to the epa. It's never crude or rough. the tsx sedan is also available with 3. 5-liter v6, delivering substantially more power and torque, with a 3 mpg mileage penalty. It's more substantial, perhaps, and heavier, with character more in tune with the luxury class. technology has always been a big part of the tsx's appeal, and this extends beyond the drivetrain and chassis. Updated for 2011, acura's superb navigation system is the equal of anything in the class. It displays real-time traffic with congestion re-routing and local and national weather. The top-line audio system sets a standard for the class, too, with superbly crisp surround sound. Like the other features, voice command and hands-free bluetooth cell phone architecture are cleanly integrated with the car's electronics. The tsx delivers acura's hallmark traits of smooth mechanicals, a feature-rich cabin and distinctive, if not necessarily pretty design. If it isn't a true sports sedan, it's very good being what it is: a stylish, efficient premium compact sedan with a sporty tilt. Options are limited. the tsx sedan 29,610) is powered by a 2. 4-liter inline-4, delivering 201 horsepower and up to 172 pound feet of torque. Either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission is available for the price, with 17-inch alloy wheels. There are active head restraints for front passengers and anchors for child safety seats (latch) in back. Active safety features include electronic stability control (esc) and anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist. A tire pressure monitor is required by federal law. walkaroundthe tsx applies what acura calls its keen edge design theme. Like it or not, the hard creases and prominent bulges stand out more explicitly than those on acuras past. There is a consistency to acura's styling that ties its current models together, starting with the prominent, stylized caliper logo, and there is no mistaking the tsx as anything other than a vehicle from honda's luxury brand. what stands out for 2011 is the newly introduced tsx sport wagon. It's more than seven inches longer than a bmw 3 series and five inches longer than a lexus if, and it's wider than both. there's no deceit in the tsx wagon, with nothing meant to imply that it is some truck-style, suv or crossover. Its aesthetics rest in its utility. We like that, even if the large rear hatch and bulging rear bumper create a big rear end. for 2011, all tsx models get a mild facelift: the chin spoiler in front has been revised. There's a new grille and new, bright garnishes below the front bumper around the fog lights. In back, the taillights and license-plate trim have been updated. the 2011 tsx styling tweaks come with new underbody panels intended to improve aerodynamics. These plastic sheets essentially fare-in many mechanical components, smoothing airflow underneath the car and minimizing the aural disturbance it creates. In its quest to reduce noise inside the tsx, acura has also improved the glass. The windshield now has a sheet of sound-deadening acoustic laminate between layers of glass, and the side windows are nearly 25 percent thicker than before. the tsx's front end blends elements from acura's other two sedans, the sporty tl and the more serious rl, and from the mdx sport utility. Its side view departs a bit more from the acura family look, but keeps just enough of the cues to stay true to its keen edge design dna. Any rear angle is more than a bit busy, and suggests recent toyota camrys more than the previous tsx. The five spokes now have a beveled lip, giving them a little more visual depth. The split five-spoke 18-inch wheels that identify the tsx v6 are unchanged. The six-cylinder is also distinguished by a v6 badge on the trunk and slightly larger lower grille inlets. interiorthe 2011 acura tsx benefits from a range of updates inside, beginning with minor appearance items like chrome door releases and contrasting stitching on the standard leather seats. There is also more sound insulation throughout. This all goes along with the introduction of the new tsx sport wagon. two other functional improvements stand out for 2011. The center-console storage box is now cooled by the air conditioning, keeping candy bars, snacks or even a canned soft drink fit for consumption on the hottest days. And the navigation system, already quite effective, has been updated with a full vga monitor that greatly enhances resolution. it's easy to like the tsx interior. The cabin is comfortable without being plush, and sporty without being sparse. Communication between driver and car is, for the most part, open, easy and unabridged. the decorative trim is a dark gray metallic plastic, and everything else inside the wagon we tested was black, except for the trim around the main gauges and a couple of buttons. The effect is somber, dark, dense and boring. With the tsx's conventional stick key, which is increasingly rare in this class of sedans, it almost made the car feel dated. (however, some of us prefer traditional keys.) the tsx is anything but dated. We'd choose one with a two-tone interior schemes. The lighter color below the trim line makes the tsx cabin much more appealing. the front seats are supportive, with enough side bolstering for reasonably rambunctious motoring on twisty roads. 2011 acura zdx review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Since it was intended primarily to meet the needs of self-indulgent couples, the declining roofline is not out of place on a vehicle like this, but it does compromise space in the rear seats. So does the use of long front doors (intended to accentuate the coupe-like proportions), which make the rear doors short and less convenient for access. like the exterior design, the interior is unique and employs special materials and bold design ideas to keep the focus on the satisfaction of two privileged passengers. The sense of privilege inside the leather-lined cabin is unmistakable, and the zdx reinforces that impression with a plush, well-controlled ride, and the creamy propulsion provided by its sophisticated drivetrain. the zdx is powered by a 300-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6 hooked to a 6-speed automatic with manual override control (via steering-wheel buttons). Throttle response is immediate and authoritative, and the gearshifts are smooth and positive. In keeping with its role, the car's noise levels are low, the climate-control system effective and the entertainment systems bright and clear. at anything but breakneck pace, the zdx steers keenly and stays on line with an intuitive accuracy. Only when pressing hard in the convoluted confines of a canyon road does the big acura begin to remind its driver that it's a close relative of the company's big mdx. Narrow roads quickly emphasize how wide the car's track is, even if the clever design reduces the visual impression of size, and we were hard-pressed to avoid the botts dots from drumming through the suspension as we put wheels over the line. models with the integrated dynamics system that is part of the advance package do better in the twisties, but the zdx luxury priorities are highlighted by its slightly numb steering and unhurried transmission response. That's all relative to the usual high-fidelity acura standards, we should add. The zdx still impresses with moves that belie its considerable size and heft. introduced as a 2010 model, the zdx is unchanged for 2011. lineupthe 2011 acura zdx comes in three versions. To get the aggressive haunches that distinguish this crossover, acura produced a rear quarter panel that required extraordinary stamping procedures. With the deepest draw of any panel the company has ever produced, great care had to be taken with die design to avoid wrinkling or tearing of the metal skin. a panoramic glass roof (said to be the longest glass roof in the industry) features an integrated power moonroof. Dual powered sunshades provide shelter from the sun. Wide wheel arches, pronounced shoulders and angular creases provide surface tension to dispel any suggestion of the usual two-box suv look. Xenon lights are mounted inside asymmetrical housings up front, and there's a stylistic continuation of acura's chevron grille motif in the lower-bumper apertures. at the rear, the designers again used distinct panel shapes, tail light outlines and integrated exhaust outlets to embellish the silhouette. A lower glass panel in the rear hatch helps improve rear visibility. interiordesigned as it was to cosset affluent couples, the zdx interior received close attention from the acura designers. This is the first time the company has employed hand-stitched leather on the dashboard, door panels and center console, and it has been executed with great care. The hides themselves are what's known as full grain. Many leather finishes are buffed surfaces, necessary to remove flaws. These are carefully selected, unscarred hides from hungary and china. fitting the leather panel on the sculpted dashboard was quite a challenge, due to the unusual concave shape, and required special techniques. The result, particularly with the saddle-colored combination, is striking, and the textures themselves are rich and pleasing to the touch. the rest of the interior is very modern in design, with electroluminescent gauges and a center console the acura designers call the monolith. There is over 26 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats, expanding to nearly 56 cubic feet when those seatbacks are folded flat. Access is by the convenient hatch-like rear door, and the liftover height is helpfully low. further expansion is possible (for long objects such as golf bags) by removing side panels in the cargo compartment. An underfloor area of about two cubic feet is also available for secure storage. the front passenger area is both spacious and attractive, but the sloping roofline makes inevitable inroads into rear headroom. Legroom is also not as good in the back, and access is hindered by the small doors and their proximity to the rear wheel well. Critical controls are found on the steering wheel, while secondary switches are logically arranged on the dashboard and center console. Voice recognition makes the phone, radio and navigation systems very simple to operate. driving impressionas with all acura models these days, the emphasis here is on refinement. Acura's engineers took great care to exorcise unwanted noise and impacts, and the result is a very quiet and composed vehicle. On models equipped with the two-position (sport or comfort) integrated dynamics system that accompanies the advance package, the bandwidth is expanded enough to allow remarkably sporty driving on challenging roads. assisted by acura's sh-awd intelligent all-wheel-drive system, the zdx steers accurately and hangs on well in fast turns. The extensive ride-motion control strategy (using magneto-rheological damping fluid that varies its viscosity in response to an electric current to vary shock damping) helps the zdx retain a plush ride in more sedate applications. In those circumstances, the zdx's opulent interior and comfortable seating provide an all-encompassing sense of privilege. while it seems almost eerie to bend a large and heavy vehicle like the zdx through the tortuous sections of a canyon road and have it stay on line and not wallow, the layer of relentless refinement still makes itself felt with a slightly remote steering feel and gearshifts, even when initiated manually, that are a touch sluggish in response. in the base model, which goes without the variable damping system, shock tuning is clearly on the comfort side of the equation, yet the zdx still acquits itself well on tortuous roads for a 4500-pound vehicle. Torque isn't bad in the mid-range either, thanks to the vtec variable valve-event technology, but low-rev urge isn't enough to overwhelm the two tons of luxury equipment without help from the obliging six-speed automatic. fuel economy is an epa-estimated 16/23 miles per gallon city/highway, or 19 mpg combined. as for open-road conduct, there isn't much that can waft passengers along with better comfort, quietness and security than these big acuras. Along with the distinctive styling comes top-drawer refinement, elevated equipment levels with an ease of operation born of thoughtful engineering, and a sophisticated driving experience.
