2005 pontiac grand prix review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Comfort and utility with fun and flair. introductionsince 1962, the pontiac grand prix has been a family-size car with custom-car styling and a performance-car attitude. The first two generations of grand prix were big cars, too, even by 1960s standards. For 2004, pontiac released the ninth-generation grand prix, and it's better than ever.  the previous pontiac grand prix had been known as a fine mover, a good stopper, a fair looker and a reasonable handler. The current car brings improvements in all those categories, and a real revolution in interior design, not only in eye-appeal and ergonomics but in versatility, flexibility and utility. Model and trim designations have been rationalized, while the comp g option package still stokes excitement at the top end of the range. lineupthe 2005 pontiac grand prix is offered in three primary trim levels: base, gt and gtp, with an additional ultimate-handling competition group available on the gtp. Abs 600) is optional and comes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), advanced traction control, and a tire inflation monitor. A driver's package 500) combines a power driver's seat, front and rear floor mats and 16-inch polished aluminum wheels.  gt 24,800) adds abs with brake-based traction control, electronic (rather than hydraulic) power steering, power front seats, upgraded interior appointments, aluminum wheels, and mp3 capability for the stereo.  gtp 26,560) gets a supercharged version of the same v6 engine that generates 260 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 280 pound-feet of torque at 3600 rpm. Goodrich comp t/a performance tires, stabilitrak sport, tapshift, and a more aggressive 3. 29:1 final drive gear (instead of the standard gtp's 2. 93). Stabilitrak sport is a vehicle-stability system tuned to provide maximum hands-on control during cornering. Tapshift (touch activated power) provides a set of small paddles on the steering wheel allowing semi-manual shifting of the automatic transmission.  options for gt and gtp models include dual-zone automatic climate control 275); xm satellite radio 325); a 235-watt monsoon audio system 695); dvd-based navigation with monsoon audio 2,390), trip computer with head-up display and dual-zone automatic climate control 875); leather upholstery 795).  side-impact and curtain airbags 395) are available on all models. So is a remote starter 150) and engine-block heater 35). walkarounda commitment to style separates the grand prix from other mid-size transportation pods. The rear end is as muscular as a speed skater's. Pronounced, enlarged taillights are mounted at the corners. A discreet spoiler finishes the deck lid.  through the taillights and extended into the sheet metal are two horizontal bulges, like cladding segments escaped from the sides of a grand am. If this were a fashion story i would say they were 'to add eye interest' to the rear. Anyway, following a grand prix down the highway is a pleasant occupation. The rear is important in appearance and certainly distinguishable from its road mates.  appearance is the most subjective aspect of any automobile. Suffice it to say i would rather follow this grand prix than spot it in the rearview mirror: i'm not delighted with the front end. The slightly sculptured hood is a good beginning, but when shaping lines come off the hood swooping down to trace around the grille something goes wrong for me. The resulting grille with its trademark pontiac division is straight across on top with bowl-shaped curving sides. It appears to me like a tight smirk, ungenerous and simpering. The headlights are even more slanted and attenuated than on the previous grand prix.  the so-called coke-bottle sides are marked (marred i would say) by two parallel character lines through the two doors about a hand's span below the door handles. Gratefully, there's no cladding, but these lines bother me. I think one reason the new grand prix looks best in black is because black hides these creases.  the black grand prix at the press introduction also had a solution for some of my objections to the new grille: a heavier, more important optional chrome surround. (now if a black grand prix came with a crew armed with california dusters i'd consider it in a heartbeat.)  the aerodynamic door handles are hard to grab and hold onto. interiorinside is where the grand prix absolutely shines. Leather and satin nickel set the tone for the interior style of the grand prix, and materials pleasant to both eye and fingertips continue the experience.  the seats are supportive and comfortable. The leather-wrapped steering wheel fills the hand just right. The outside mirrors are remarkably large for a sedan. That's a feature suv drivers often mention as a reason they like suvs. The large center speedometer stands out from and overlaps the tachometer (on the left) and the circle containing the fuel and temperature gauges (on the right). No cluttering inner-ring of numbers. Below an organized cluster of white icons on simple black buttons and dials keep the driver tuned in, warm or cool, etc. Pleasing to look at and nothing bewildering.  as comfortable as the seating, as pleasant to look at and feel as the interior is, what is really special is its functionality and flexibility. Not only do the back seats fold down in pairs or singly (with a 60/40 split) to effectively increase cargo capacity, the back of the front passenger seat folds forward (on gt and gtp), table flat.  all this flat and nearly flat space can be accessed through the trunk (with a particularly low lift-over height.) thus it's easy to fold the appropriate seats and load long objects into the vehicle: a roll of carpet or a ladder or skis or italian market umbrellas. That trunk opening besides being lower is also about ten inches wider. The products had to be stripped of their packing to manipulate them through car doors. Cognizant of that problem, grand prix designers played dentist: 'open wider, please.' and now the doors swing out 82 degrees, improving ingress and egress for people and. 2007 pontiac g5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ride is a bit firm but not uncomfortable. However, we found the handling of the gt mediocre.  pontiac describes the g5 as a five-passenger coupe, but limited rear legroom make carrying five passengers a serious challenge. Like most coupes, the back of the cabin is best used for parcels.  air curtains are optional and we recommend them. They provide life-saving head protection in a side-impact crash and federal crash tests show they are needed on the g5.  underneath the new pontiac body are the mechanical underpinnings used on the chevrolet cobalt coupe introduced in 2005. Essentially, the g5 is simply pontiac's version of the cobalt. lineupthe 2007 pontiac g5 is available only as a coupe, which means two doors and a smallish back seat. It comes in two versions.  the g5 14,725) comes with air conditioning, power windows and door locks, am/fm/cd, fold-down back seat, height-adjustable driver's seat and remote/keyless entry. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual. The standard model features the fe1 or smooth-riding suspension.  the g5 gt 18,375) adds anti-lock brakes, upgraded audio, xm satellite radio, cruise control, and fog lamps. The standard transmission is a five-speed manual.  options include automatic transmission 850); air curtain side airbags 395); remote-vehicle start 190); sunroof 750); anti-lock brakes 400); and onstar 695 on the gt and part of $1,090 security package on the base model).  safety features include frontal air bags; front seat belts with pretensioners (in a crash these remove the slack). Anti-lock brakes are optional; abs can help drivers avoid accidents by allowing them to maintain control of the steering at maximum braking effort. We recommend getting it. That said, from the front, side or rear the g5 has a cleaner and smoother look than pontiacs past, which tended to be cluttered with stick-on body cladding.  to an increasing number of automakers, a family resemblance in design is a goal. They see it as part of establishing a marketing tool called a brand identity. We found the cloth material on the seats was handsome.  there is plenty of legroom for two people up front but the back seat is barely suitable for a six-foot adult for a short trip across town. It is an excellent location, however, for parcels.  all the controls are easy to find and use but there is a severe shortage of storage bins and trays.  the driver's seat is adjustable for height. However, it seems to work better for raising short drivers than lowering it for those who are tall. The problem is that when the seat is lowered all the way to accommodate a tall driver the seat cushion tilts a bit forward. It is as if there is a half-hearted effort to dislodge its occupant, which seems a bit rude.  like many coupes, which favor a low roof as they go for a streamlined look, the g5 has somewhat narrow windows. Some people like that because it makes them feel as secure as a turtle in a shell. Others find it is slightly confining.  one problem is poor visibility over the driver's left shoulder. Big roof pillars and a small rear window combine to make it hard to see vehicles coming up to pass.  air curtains are one option that should be purchased. These cost $395 and cover the side windows (front and back). The idea is to provide head protection in a side-impact crash. Some studies have shown such head protection greatly increases the chance of survival. When the national highway traffic safety administration did side-impact crash tests on the g5 without the air curtains safety officials noted that, had a human been in the driver's seat, serious head injuries would have been likely. When a second g5 with the air curtains was tested there was a big improvement, although the pontiac still did not fare as well as a 2007 honda civic coupe with air curtains as standard equipment.  onstar is a nice security blanket. This option combines a global positioning system and a cellular telephone (far more powerful than a hand-held cell phone) to put the driver in contact with an onstar center which is manned 24/7. The onstar center can tell where the vehicle is located and can provide help, ranging from a tow truck to directions. In case of a crash severe enough to deploy the airbags the system will automatically call the center so help can be sent even if the occupants are incapacitated.  we liked the sunroof. On some cars they tend to scoop outside air and funnel it into the vehicle as if attempting to duplicate one of the opening storm scenes from the wizard of oz. That is not the case on the g5. There is so little turbulence it is possible to open the sunroof on a 20-degree day and enjoy the sunlight without freezing, with the heater turned up.  the trunk is rated at 13. 9 cubic feet which is competitive in this segment. For carrying more cargo the rear seat can be folded down. driving impressionas with most sporty cars the ride in the pontiac g5 gt is somewhat firm but encounters with potholes and tar strips do not result in any serious discomfort. The ride is comfortable enough for day-to-day commuting even in the midwest where the roads are rough.  the steering is somewhat heavy and the effort increases during turns. This doesn't quite meet the standard of an upper-body workout but for some people it will come close. The steering is tight, however. The car begins to respond.  the g5 gt feels secure and fairly responsive on gentle or sweeping turns. However, when the turns are tighter and the speed increases the gt objects. Suddenly it feels nose-heavy, stubborn and not sporty. Major competitors, like the civic, now come with five-speed automatics. The extra gear means a better chance at providing good acceleration at all times but better fuel economy. That means it was striving to get the most out of the engine.  for maximum power pontiac recommends premium fuel but says the gt will not be damaged if 87 octane is used. The gt gets an epa-rated 24 mpg city/32 highway.  pontiac did a great job on the feel of the brakes. The pedal was firm but it was easy to slow either a little or a lot. Also, the front of the g5 didn't dip too much under hard braking. That gives it a balanced, secure feel.  the summer performance tires that come on the gt are unsuitable for winter use. They offer so little grip that they are likely to worry even those experienced in winter driving. In packed snow (5f to 20f), we found extremely poor traction even on flat terrain. With little grip, the gt has trouble turning and stopping. The enhanced traction control doesn't solve the problem. Halfway up one hill all it did was to cut the power as it tried to help the wheels regain traction, but the effect was that all the momentum was lost. Putting snow tires only on the front would help with turning, but with far more slippery tires on the rear wheels the handling could be treacherous. It would be nice if pontiac would give consumers interested in the gt the choice of the performance tires or regular, all-season radials. summarythe pontiac g5 gt is okay, but unremarkable. The pontiac g5 is based off the chevrolet cobalt and provides all the same benefits and drawbacks of a practical small sedan. The g5 comes in two trims: base and gt. It has a semi-independent rear suspension, rear spoiler, and steel wheels standard. The pontiac g5 is an all new model for 2007. 2009 pontiac g6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fresh styling, improved gas mileage. introductionthe 2009. 5 pontiac g6 brings a fresh appearance some nice engineering upgrades to this sporty lineup of midsize sedans, coupes and convertibles.  a mid-year freshening gives these late-2009 models a sharper look up front, more like that of the top-level gxp. The g6 two-door coupe is sleek and sporty, the convertible features a dramatic folding hardtop, and the sedan is an attractive alternative to other midsize sedans. And several new option packages, which according to pontiac were inspired by consumer demand, make it easier to upgrade and personalize the g6. As before onstar, side airbags and anti-lock brakes are standard equipment on all g6's.  we've found the g6 gt and gxp models to have good road manners, even when driven hard, thanks to their long wheelbase and european-designed architecture. This is based on test drives of the g6 gt sedan, gt convertible, and gxp coupe.  the price point makes the pontiac g6 a popular choice as a mid-size sedan and we've found it roomy and plush with excellent overall function. The coupe is comfortable and sporty. Standard features also include air conditioning; tilt/telescopic steering wheel; power windows, door locks, and mirrors; am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack; xm satellite radio hardware; onstar; and 17-inch five-spoke wheels with 225/50r17 tires. The preferred package 370) adds cruise control; remote vehicle starting; leather-wrapped steering wheel, brake handle, and shift knob; and steering wheel audio controls. A special value package deletes some equipment and drops the tire size to 215/55r17 for a credit 1,890).  new for 2009 are two sport packages for the base model. Sport package 1 1,245) upgrades to a six-speed automatic transmission for improved performance and economy, and also adds tapshift transmission controls on the steering wheel, a rear spoiler, and stabilitrak electronic stability control. Additionally, the convertible comes with 18-inch machined-face wheels. Backing that up are a sport-tuned suspension, stabilitrak, 18-inch chrometech wheels, unique front and rear fascias, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a leather interior.  the sun and sound plus packages for gt 1,535) and gxp 1,125) include not only the sunroof and six-disc cd changer but also 17-inch chrometech wheels for the gt, or 18-inch black chrometech wheels on gxp. The street edition for the gxp 990) adds hood scoops and a hammerhead spoiler.  other options include a six-way power driver's seat 200) for the base and gt models, an engine-block heater 75), and various appearance items. A premium package 1,195) for base and gt adds heated leather-appointed front bucket seats and six-way power adjustment for the driver's seat. All models offer the new mylink package 250-395), which bundles one year of onstar directions & connections, a full year of xm satellite radio (rather than the standard 3-month trial), a usb port, and bluetooth phone connectivity. Safety features that come on all models include driver and passenger frontal and side-impact airbags, abs with traction control, and latch child-seat attachments. All models except the convertible come with side curtain airbags as well. Outboard front seat belts have pretensioners and load limiters. Onstar 8. 0 is standard on all models, an excellent safety feature thanks to its ability to summon help. walkaroundthe pontiac g6 models are attractive cars. They have the smooth styling of the latest-generation pontiacs, sharing cues with the solstice roadster and other models and sort of a lexus/toyota look from the rear. The traditional pontiac twin upper grille nostrils are now larger, with sharper corners. The broad lower grille with its narrow center divider is gone completely, replaced by a large trapezoidal opening in the center, flanked by a pair of oblong scoops that sweep up at their outboard edges. In all, the look is sharper, more aggressive than before, and more like that of the high-performance gxp (which remains unchanged).  additional new creases in the sedan's rear bumper provide more definition, while echoing the new look up front. Deck-lid spoiler options range from none to a nicely integrated raised lip to the aptly named hammerhead, whose (theoretically functional) side pods resemble the face of its deep-sea namesake.  the restyled gt and unchanged gxp now look more alike than before, although the gxp retains its unique front fascia, with more vertical upper nostrils filled with a grille texture that resembles braided stainless steel. The three lower openings are similar in shape to those on the new base and gt, but without the steer-horn molding, and all three are smaller, leaving room for the more prominent upper grille and for separate round foglight nacelles at the sides. The center opening is black while the side openings share the braided-stainless theme.  the coupe and convertible inject more excitement into the styling. The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, the coupe and convertible feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu. interiorthe pontiac g6 has a nice interior with attractive fabrics and comfortable bucket seats. At first, it has that tank-like pontiac feeling of sitting down low in the cockpit, but that feeling goes away in time, and the g6 becomes a happy, comfortable companion. The cabin is altogether different from the old soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of older pontiacs. It's much more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and support in handling maneuvers. We found them very comfortable thanks to thick padding and sufficient bolsters.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. The coupe's rear seating is a little tighter, and the convertible's tighter still, especially in the shoulder and hip room categories. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (illuminated in red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it; very tasteful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels.  the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that makes it easy to use the sound system's features, as well as to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions. The trip computer and driver information system are likewise intuitive and enjoyable to use.  the audio system works well and the knobs are sized well for operating while driving, a welcome relief from the tiny buttons and knobs on many systems. However, we miss the smart pre-set buttons used on previous gm vehicles that let the driver switch from favorite am, fm, a.

2008 pontiac grand prix review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fun to drive and practical. introductiontrue to its long heritage, the pontiac grand prix is a big car promising performance-car excitement. The first two generations of grand prix were big cars, even by 1960s standards. The current-generation grand prix was launched as a 2004 model, and we think it's the best grand prix yet. The v6 develops 200 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 230 pound-feet of torque at 4000. The v6 gets an epa-rated city/highway 18/28 mpg, while meeting sulev (super low emissions vehicle) standards in california and the northeast.  the grand prix gxp boasts a 5. 3-liter v8 that makes 303 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 323 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The v8 gets an epa-rated 16/25 mpg. Abs 600) is optional and comes with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and advanced traction control; the security package adds side curtain airbags, and we recommend this.  options include a premium package 940) with leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a fold-flat front passenger seat, and a cargo net. A more elaborate preferred package 965) includes power lumbar support, fold-flat front passenger seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, redundant audio controls on the steering wheel, driver information center, chrome interior accents, remote vehicle start, a cargo net, and a lighted vanity mirrors and reading lights. The special edition 1,995) adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, stainless exhaust tips, body-color grille and aero extensions all around; while a sport package 680) adds fog lamps, stainless exhaust tips, and polished aluminum wheels; and a custom accessories package 675) combines a unique rear spoiler, front grille inserts, and stainless steel exhaust tips. Polished alloy wheels 495), the fold-flat front passenger seat 75), and remote starter 190) are also available as stand-alones.  the performance-oriented gxp 29,325) boasts a 5. 3-liter transverse-mounted v8 that makes 303 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 323 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The gxp’s automatic transmission comes with tapshift (touch activated power), a feature that provides a pair of steering-wheel-safety features include dual-stage front airbags as standard equipment. Antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, and curtain airbags are optional. Mounted paddles for manual shift capability. Gxp models also get bigger brakes, an antiskid system, leather and suede upholstery, dual-zone climate controls, heated front seats, nine-speaker monsoon sound system, a head-up instrument display, 255/45wr18 front and 225/50wr18 rear bridgestone potenza tires, and polished alloy wheels. Most of the equipment that’s optional on the base model is standard on the gxp. And the suspension is even sportier, with higher spring rates, gas-charged shocks, a nine-millimeter lower ride height, and a larger rear stabilizer bar.  both models are offered with a sunroof 895); or a sun and sound package that combines a power sunroof and a 6-cd changer on the gxp 1,195) plus the monsoon sound system on the base model 1,590). Xm satellite radio 200) and an engine block heater 75) are also available. A navigation system is offered on both models, but its price 1,845-2,540) varies depending on other equipment. Safety features include dual-stage front airbags as standard equipment. Antilock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control, and curtain airbags are optional. walkaroundthe grand prix is an attractive car. A commitment to style separates the grand prix from other mid-size transportation appliances. The rear end is as muscular as a speed skater's. One reason the grand prix looks best in black is because black hides these creases.  the aerodynamic door handles can be hard to grab and hold onto when in a hurry. interiorthe grand prix interior is has been upgraded since its introduction and it's a pleasant environment that is appropriate for the price. Materials pleasant to both the eye and fingertips enhance the experience, especially in the gxp, where the steering wheel and shifter are leather-wrapped.  the seats are supportive and comfortable. Front-seat headroom is not as good as in some of the other mid-size sedans, however. The leather-wrapped steering wheel fills the hand just right. The outside mirrors are remarkably large for a sedan. They offer excellent rearward vision yet add no noticeable wind noise. All of the controls are well-marked and within arm's reach. The glove box lid opens with the clatter of plastic.  rear-seat headroom is a bit tight, the downside to the coupe-like body design, and the rear seat-bottoms are flat and set low, making long-trip comfort an issue. The large center speedometer stands out from and overlaps the tachometer to the left and the circle containing the fuel and temperature gauges to the right. With a background in a shadowy grid pattern, these watch-like dials yield their information with simple, uncluttered, handsome functionality. No cluttering inner-ring of numbers.  the head-up display in the gxp is almost subliminal in its presence. Below an organized cluster of white icons on simple black buttons and dials keep the driver tuned in, warm or cool, etc. Pleasing to look at and nothing bewildering.  the cabin is comfortable and pleasant to look at, but what is really special is its functionality and flexibility. Not only do the back seats fold down in pairs or singly (with a 60/40 split) to effectively increase cargo capacity, the back of the front passenger seat folds forward, table-flat on gxp (optional on base). With all those seats folded, there’s 57 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to some small wagons.  all this flat and nearly flat space can be accessed through the trunk, which benefits from a particularly low lift-over height. Thus it's easy to fold the appropriate seats and load long objects into the vehicle: a roll of carpet or a ladder or skis or italian market umbrellas. The trunk opening itself is low and wide.  with the rear seat up and five people on board, the trunk still holds 16 cubic feet of whatever those folks.
