2008 saturn astra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New saturn is gm's best small car. introductionthe saturn astra is an all-new car. At least it's new to the american automotive landscape: astra has been offered for years in europe under the opel flag, where it's been giving the vw golf a run for top-seller bragging rights. The new astra is so much better in every respect than the saturn model it replaces that we've forgotten the earlier compact's name.  the astra comes in two body styles, both hatchbacks designed for practicality and built on the same chassis. There's a three-door version that is lower in overall height than the five-door version, but otherwise they share the same outside dimensions. This package was developed on european roadways where performance is measured more by balance at speed than how fast it accelerates away from an intersection. Pricing fits that aspect too, running from under $16,000 to about $21,000 for a fully loaded model.  it's also a good do-it-all kind of car: cart around a batch of kids, shuttle around town or cover big commuting miles, fill with a lot of school debris, or make a good basis for a pocket rocket like the gti, civic si, or mazdaspeed3. Air conditioning is not standard. Xe options include air conditioning 960), automatic 1,325), alloy wheels 350), stability control 495), two-panel sunroof 1,000) and heated front seats 250).  the xr five-door 16,925) adds air conditioning, seven-speaker mp3 stereo with steering-wheel controls, alloy wheels and fog lamps. Except the ac and wheels, single options are the same as xe. Sport seats and upgraded instruments join the other features in the xr five-door sport handling group. Options include the automatic 1,325), 18-inch alloy wheels and performance tires 495), and heated front seats. Package groups are the premium trim 745) and advanced audio from the five-door.\  safety features standard on all astras include frontal, front side-impact, and side curtain airbags, one year of onstar safe & sound with accident notification, active front headrests, abs, traction control, and tire pressure monitors. Electronic stability control is standard on the three-door and optional on five-doors; we recommend opting for it because it can reduce skidding. White parking light bulbs belie the european heritage, as do simple yet stylish side signal repeaters that appear chrome jewelry until switched on when a signal can be seen anywhere on the side of the car, not just ahead of more vulnerable mirror-mounted devices.  the lack of visual clutter and cladding should be welcome by all from the rust belt to the southern border; excess chrome is reserved mainly for badges and the horizontal trim front and rear.  rear panel styling echoes the front with a recessed panel in the hatch split by trim and the license plate in another recess in the bumper; since they're all hatchbacks, all astras have rear wipers for better wet weather visibility.  on the three-door, the window line arcs downward from about two-thirds through the front door; the earlier ford focus hatchback will come to mind as similar. The five-door has a similar look to the ends, although the rear is more upright to make full use of the footprint. The rear-door opening angles up and rearward from the wheel and, instead of reversing direction at the glass line, it keeps going up and aft to the top of the glass. Since the door opening matches the seated position of rear seat riders, this pays big dividends in getting into and out of, and seeing out of, the rear seat.  perhaps not as stylish or unique as the saturn sky roadster, the saturn astra is still distinctive and has visual appeal. A lighter headliner and lots of glass keep the cabin fairly light and airy for the primarily dark color scheme. American drivers might have to make two minor adaptations, one using the icon bc, which stands for on-board computer for trip data, the other being electronic controls of wipers and signals that always have the stalk at its default or standard resting position. The back seat is better used for two adults or three children. The five-door will accommodate six-footers front and rear simultaneously. 2006 saturn ion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. More power and convenience. introductionsaturn's strength has always been its dealers. It's saturn's car that haven't always measured up, particularly in comfort and refinement. When it appeared in 2003, the ion represented a major improvement over the old saturn s-series. We found the seats uncomfortable and its levels of refinement were average at best. However, saturn has continued to update and refine the ion over the past three model years, and we came away with positive impressions of the current models. Most of the things we complained about have been changed and refinement has been improved overall.  the most substantial changes came for 2005: larger and more supportive seats have replaced the barstools used previously, and a larger steering wheel provides a more comfortable grip. Suspension tweaks have resulted in a smoother and quieter car that's more pleasant in everyday use. At the same time, the handling is sharper, making it more fun to drive. And the appearance of the sedan was greatly improved with a new grille.  the improvements continued for 2006: saturn has reconfigured the center dash to provide more room for storage and to enhance legroom. Onstar is now standard on all ions. A larger, more powerful engine is available. Saturn has dropped the base-level sedan with its narrow seats, and a new enhanced performance package has been added to bridge the gap between the base-engine/base suspension models and the ion red line sport compact. Prices have been reduced, especially at the lower end of the line, where an 2006 ion 2 sedan lists for $2,455 less than a comparable '05 model.  meanwhile, all of the ion's best features remain unchanged. The quad coupe features innovative dual rear-access doors, like those on an extended-cab pickup, that make it easy to load and unload cargo. We found we could stuff large objects into the back seat of a saturn that would not go into a traditional two-door coupe.  the red line coupe features a 205-horsepower supercharged engine good for 0-60 mph in about 6. 3 seconds. We found it fun to drive, with strong throttle response and a sporty exhaust note. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and an automatic transmission is optional 900).  for 2006, the sedan is offered in two trim levels, called ion 2 and ion 3. Onstar, previously a $695 option, is now standard as well. A preferred package 875) adds cruise control, power windows, mirrors and locks. Aluminum wheels are also available 440).  the ion 3 sedan 14,325) and coupe 15,625) add an mp3 player and better speakers, air conditioning, cruise control, programmable power locks with remote keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, and other niceties, plus 205/55 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels. Leather upholstery 700) is optional. The new enhanced performance package 995) combines the new 2. 4-liter engine with stiffer shocks and anti-roll bars.  ion red line quad coupe 19,425) boasts 205 horsepower from a supercharged and intercooled 2. 0-liter engine mated to a heavy-duty getrag five-speed manual gearbox. A competition package 1,375) adds a quaife limited-slip differential, 17-inch forged wheels, a boost gauge and a programmable tachometer.  stereo upgrades include a cd changer, cd/mp3 systems, and xm satellite radio 325). A travel package 200) includes a map light, outside temperature gauge, compass, and auto-dimming inside mirror. A power sunroof 725) is available for all models.  safety features include dual-stage driver and front-passenger frontal airbags. New for 2006 is a passenger sensing system that switches off the right front airbag if the right front seat is unoccupied, or occupied by a small adult or child who could be injured by the airbag; it's standard in all ions except the red line. (saturn still strongly recommends restraining children in the back seat in appropriate child seats.) optional side-curtain airbags 395) are designed to improve head protection for front- and rear-seat passengers in the event of a side impact or rollover. The ion has received five-star/five-star ratings, the highest attainable, in the federal government's crash tests. We recommend the optional abs and traction control 400) as it can help the driver avoid a crash. The bright metal grille with the saturn logo front-and-center that were added for 2005 give the ion a more conventional look, but it's less polarizing (and better looking) than the previous design with its heavy bright bar over a blacked-out slot just above the bumper.  the windshield slopes dramatically, helping the relatively tall ion look sleek. And the ion does stand tall, at 57. 4 inches. The sedan's roof curves heavily down to the high trunk line, almost giving it the appearance of a hatchback rather than a traditional sedan. We found the ion's small, lever-style door handles relatively hard to grasp.  the quad coupe breathes through a blacked-out slot above the bumper and a larger rectangular scoop below, but it looks simple, functional, and attractive. Red line models have three big openings below the bumper.  the quad coupe gets its name from a pair of mini-doors behind the main portals that open on rear-mounted hinges, in much the same way as the auxiliary doors on an extended-cab pickup. The rear doors have no exterior handles to compromise the coupe's sporty styling; and when they are open, there's no b-pillar in the opening, which makes access to the rear seat very easy for such a small car. It's an innovative design that enhances the practicality of this sport coupe. The front passenger seat folds flat, improving utility further. Saturn likes to demonstrate that it's possible to stuff a nine-foot kayak into the coupe through its doors, a feat that would be plenty tough for many suvs, let alone other compact coupes. The polymer panels can't rust and, because they are slightly resilient, they resist the minor impacts that leave small dents and dings in sheet metal. Another benefit of the composite panels is that they are relatively easy to replace. Saturn has exploited this advantage on the ion by offering alternatively colored roof rails that owners can easily install to customize their car's appearance. Nickel-silver roof rails are available for the coupe and sedan, and charcoal rails are available for the sedan only. We weren't happy with the comfort nor the quality of the ion interior when the model first appeared in 2003, but saturn has made significant changes since then.  the biggest of these changes came for 2005, when larger and more substantial seats replaced the original flat and skimpy perches. This represented a vast improvement, though we'd still like more side support. However, they do feature a height adjustment via a mechanical jacking system something like volkswagen's. The red line coupe comes with excellent recaro seats, but they are best suited for drivers with narrow hips.  textures and materials were upgraded for 2005 and the overall effect is nice. Chrome rings adorn the instruments and vents. The shifter and cruise controls were improved as well.  .

2005 saturn ion review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Substantial improvements for saturn's compact. introductionmore refinement is among the list of improvements to the saturn ion for 2005. The 2005 saturn ion is smoother, quieter, and more comfortable than last year's models. And a new grille improves the looks of the sedan models. The changes raise the 2005 ion to the level of being a compelling choice in a strong class of compact cars.  the ion was redesigned and launched as an all-new model for 2003. It received some updates for 2004, but the changes for 2005 are more substantial.  for starters, the 2005 ion sedans and coupes are more comfortable, with new seats that are larger and more supportive, addressing a big complaint with last year's models. Adding to this comfortable new seating position is a larger steering wheel, a surprisingly important feature.  the 2005 ions ride better than last year's models. They're smoother and quieter, making them more pleasant in daily use. Handling is sharper, making them more enjoyable to drive. Extensive mechanical improvements to the 2005 models include revised suspension settings and improved steering feel. The front seats offer lots of headroom, and the back seats are roomy. A well-equipped ion sedan retails for just $15,000.  ion quad coupes feature innovative dual rear-access doors, small doors like those on an extended-cab pickup that maximize the usefulness of the interior space by making it easy to load and unload cargo. We found we could stuff large objects into the back seats that will not go into a traditional two-door coupe.  enthusiasts will gravitate to the high-performance red line coupe, which features a 205-horsepower supercharged engine. Saturn says it's good for 0-60 mph in 6. 3 seconds. We found it fun to drive, with strong throttle response and a sporty exhaust note. Granted, ion's quality is not up to those of the toyota corolla and honda civic, according to ratings from j. Saturn was ranked well ahead of honda and toyota and was outranked only by luxury brands in j. Maintaining one is a satisfying experience as well. Saturn ranked no. 2 in a 2003 j. Saturn calls the coupe a quad coupe for its unusual reverse-opening rear doors. A five-speed manual transmission is standard. Automatic transmissions are optional 980).  three trim levels are available, called ion 1, ion 2, and ion 3. The sedan is offered in all three. The windows wind and the mirrors adjust manually. Air conditioning costs extra 960).  the ion 2 sedan 14,380) and coupe 14,930) also come with air conditioning, a cd player, a more deluxe interior with a driver's seat that adjusts for height, and 195/60 tires on 15-inch aluminum wheels. A convenience package 825) adds cruise control, power windows, mirrors and locks.  the ion 3 sedan 15,905) and coupe 16,680) add an mp3 player and better speakers, cruise control, selective locking and unlocking with remote keyless entry, power windows and mirrors, and other niceties, plus 205/55 tires on 16-inch aluminum wheels. Leather upholstery 700) is optional.  safety features include dual-stage driver and front-passenger frontal airbags. Optional curtain airbags 395) are designed to improve head protection for front- and rear-seat passengers in the event of a side impact or rollover. The ion has received five-star/five-star ratings, the highest attainable, in the federal government's (nhtsa) crash tests. The travel package 200) includes a map light, outside temperature gauge, compass, and auto-dimming inside mirror, all useful features a power sunroof 725) is available for all models except the base ion 1.  the red line coupe boasts 205 horsepower from a supercharged and intercooled 2. 0-liter engine. The ion red line is distinguished by unique front and rear fascias, side sills, a rear wing, and recaro sport seats. walkaroundstylish yet recognizable, the 2005 saturn ion sedan drew favorable comments on the street. The new nose gives the ion a more contemporary look, and is less polarizing than the previous design, which drew criticism. From the front, the sedan's new nose resembles that of a nissan sentra, with a more traditional grille between the headlights in place of the chrome and body-color bar on 2003/04 ions.  the windshield slopes dramatically, helping the relatively tall ion look sleek. And the ion does stand tall. The ion sedan's roof curves heavily down to the high trunk line almost giving it the appearance of a hatchback rather than a traditional sedan. The sedan looks contemporary and not that dissimilar from the nissan altima and volkswagen passat, both lauded for their design. We found the ion's small, lever-style door handles relatively hard to grasp, however.  the quad coupe's exterior appearance remains unchanged. It gets its name from a pair of back doors that open on rear-mounted hinges, in much the same way as the auxiliary doors on an extended-cab pickup. The rear doors have no exterior handles to compromise the coupe's sporty styling; and when they are open, there's no b-pillar in the opening, which makes access to the rear seat very easy for such a small car. Saturn has exploited this advantage on the ion by offering alternatively colored roof rails that owners can easily install to customize their car's appearance. Nickel-silver roof rails are available for the coupe and sedan, and charcoal rails are available for the sedan. The down side is that the saturn's panels look thicker than steel sheet and gaps between body parts have to be greater to allow for expansion in hot weather. interiorcomfort has been greatly improved for the 2005 saturn ion. All but the base sedan get new seats that are larger and more substantial and offer more side support than the bar stools that were in 2003/04 models. The new seats are a vast improvement, more comfortable and more supportive, though we thought they still lacked side support. The seats feature a height adjustment, accomplished by jacking them up and down somewhat similar to those in a volkswagen. The red line coupe comes with excellent recaro seats, but they are best suited for narrower hips.  lots of headroom, a benefit of its high roofline, makes the ion sedan a good choice for tall drivers. Rear passengers benefit from slightly elevated (theater) seating, as the rear seats are mounted two inches higher than the front seats. This gives back-seat riders a better view. Rear-seat legroom is adequate, and the front seats have longer-than-normal adjustment rails. Ion's interior design features interlocking half circle.
